There are performers who do not merely interpret a repertoire, but help to create it.
This is the territory in which the work of 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐧 is situated: one of the most highly regarded cellists in the field of contemporary and experimental music, whose artistic path moves across performance, sound research, and dialogue with living composers.
In his work, the cello is never simply a concert instrument, but a sounding body, a voice, a space for exploration. A presence capable of moving between rigour, physical intensity, and imagination.
On 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟕 𝐌𝐚𝐲, with 𝐼𝑙 𝐺𝑖𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑜 𝑍𝑒𝑛, Dillon comes to Polytropon Arts Centre with a programme centred precisely on this idea of music as something living and constantly transforming: an Italian premiere, 𝐶𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑖𝑒, his own composition, and two world premieres by Corrado Rojac and Øyvind Torvund.
Alongside these new works, music by Alexander Raskatov and Kate Moore completes an intense and visionary solo journey, in which the cello becomes a place of tension, listening, and imagination.
An event conceived for those who follow the music of today, but also for anyone wishing to encounter a performer capable of turning sound research into a vivid, direct, and immediate experience.

Working on the documentation of DAS GEDÄCHTNIS GEBRAUCHSANWEISUNG, I remember the whole process: from testing and choosing the instrument with Frédéric Fradet at the Baschet Studios in Paris until the composition and the performances in Cologne and later in Porto.

𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐧 @francescodillon presents a program for solo cello conceived as a journey through timbral research, physical intensity and sonic imagination.
The concert on 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟕 𝐌𝐚𝐲 at Polytropon Arts Centre opens with 𝐶𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑖𝑒, his own composition presented as an Italian premiere, in which the cello explores rarefied and luminous sonorities. This is followed by Alexander Raskatov’s 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝐺𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑠, a work of strong theatrical tension, marked by violent contrasts and intense lyricism.
At the heart of the programme are two world premieres: Corrado Rojac’s 𝑁ℎ𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑢, inspired by the creator deity of the Guaraní and conceived as a ritual, shamanic voice, and Øyvind Torvund’s 𝑆𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑧𝑧𝑖 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑜 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑜, a cycle of fragments weaving together imaginary folk, nature and contemporary abstraction. The concert closes with Kate Moore’s 𝑅𝑒𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑜𝑛, an energetic and hypnotic piece built on tight rhythmic patterns and emotional tension.

A soloist, chamber musician and founding member of the Quartetto Prometeo @quartettoprometeo , Dillon has built an international career that places him at the forefront of contemporary music. His ongoing exploration of sound and the instrument moves across composition, interpretation and experimentation, with a stage presence that is both essential and intense.

Recensione del concerto di sabato 28 al Palazzo Brancadoro di Fermo. 🎻🎶
..Il concerto si è aperto con il Quartetto n. 4 in re maggiore op. 83 di Dmitrij Šostakovič, composto nel 1949 ma eseguito solo nel 1953 dopo la morte di Stalin, e dedicato al pittore e scenografo Pyotr Vilyams. In quattro tempi di carattere molto diverso – dalla densità sonora del primo tempo alla malinconica melopea accompagnata del secondo, alla mobilità ritmica su temi modali del terzo fino alla selvaggia melodia klezmer del tempo conclusivo- la composizione è stata interpretata con grande intensità e comunione di intenti dai quattro musicisti, che hanno creato idealmente uno strumento solo dalla grande divaricazione di registri.
Al centro del programma quattro Folk Songs scritti da altrettanti compositori di oggi come omaggio a Luciano Berio, nel centenario della nascita, e dedicati al Quartetto Prometeo: Šest dni do tizdna, siedma ned’ela di Fabio Nieder, nove piccoli pezzi per solo, duo trio e quartetto, Folk Dance di Luca Francesconi, Timelines di Ivan Fedele (First book) e Folk Song di Salvatore Sciarrino: con l’eccezione di quest’ultimo, giocoso e scanzonato, che utilizza un canto irlandese già usato anche da Beethoven, gli altri pezzi sono caratterizzati da grande complessità ritmica, ricerca di nuove sonorità e suoni non appartenenti al sistema temperato, determinando tutto ciò una particolare difficoltà esecutiva e necessità di specializzazione in questo repertorio, che i quattro esecutori hanno affrontato con spontaneità unita a maestría.
Il brano conclusivo era il Quartetto in re minore op. 56 “Voces Intimae” di Jean Sibelius, composto nel 1909 ed eseguito per la prima volta nel 1910 a Helsinki. In cinque movimenti molto diversi tra loro, la composizione si conclude con un movimento di danza sfrenata ispirata a temi folklorici, dopo i tempi precedenti che esprimono di volta in volta brio, struggimento, passionalità, forse aspetti diversi della personalità del compositore, come sembra suggerire il titolo.
Al bis è stata riservata una bellissima danza ungherese di Michele Dall’Ongaro dedicata all’ensemble...

Nouvelle journée des ateliers du violoncelle à l’atelier du Plateau :
Ce matin, master classe où Anne Handeland a écouté les conseils d’improvisation et joué avec Vincent Courtois puis ce fut au tour d’Ailen Bratico de travailler avec Francesco Dillon en jouant une partition du compositeur franco-argentin Luis Naon.
Ce soir, le Trio Liberté formé d’Aki Tsai au violon, John Stulz à l’alto et Andrew Briggs au violoncelle ont joué une transcription de Dimitry Sitkovestky des variations Goldberg de Bach alternant avec des pièces de Signes, jeux et massages de Gyorgy Kurtag. On était aux anges !
Pour ce qui me concerne, c’était la 3ème et dernière journée.
