I recently visited Sebastião Salgado’s Amazonia exhibition in Cologne, and I left deeply moved. Salgado’s work as a photographer is nothing short of extraordinary, and the exhibition itself is a profoundly immersive experience. As someone closely connected to the indigenous peoples of Brazil and with personal relationships to the Kamayurá in the Xingu this subject resonates deeply with me and feels urgently relevant. The photographs are mesmerizing, carrying an emotional weight that lingers long after leaving the gallery. The intimate portraits reveal the strength, resilience, and spirit of the indigenous communities, while the sweeping aerial shots capture the immense beauty and power of the Amazon so vast and magnificent that words alone cannot convey them. Each image tells a story, inviting viewers to feel, reflect, and connect with this extraordinary world. Yet beneath this breathtaking beauty lies a critical message: we are destroying our planet. We must reconnect with nature, protect the Amazon, and resist its destruction not only to preserve the lives and cultures of its indigenous peoples, but to safeguard the future of the entire planet.
