Saint Simon Stock was an English Carmelite priest and religious leader who lived in the 13th century. Tradition says that as a young man he lived for some time as a hermit in the hollow of a tree, which is why he became known as “Stock,” meaning tree trunk. He later joined the Carmelite Order and became its sixth General Superior. At a time when the Carmelites were facing many difficulties in Europe, Simon Stock prayed deeply for the protection and guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to Carmelite tradition, Our Lady appeared to him on 16 July 1251 and gave him the Brown Scapular, promising special graces and protection to those who wore it with faith and devotion. Because of this, St. Simon Stock became closely associated with devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Brown Scapular. He is remembered for his deep prayer life, love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, humility, and dedication to the Carmelite family. His feast day is celebrated on 16 May. Saint Simon Stock, pray for us 🙏🏽

Saint Dymphna was a young Irish princess who lived in the 7th century. After the death of her mother, her father, who had become mentally unstable through grief, began to act irrationally and wanted Dymphna to marry him because she resembled her mother greatly. Wanting to protect her purity and faith, Dymphna fled Ireland with her priest, Fr. Gerebernus, and settled in Geel, in present-day Belgium. For a time, they lived quietly, helping the poor and praying. Eventually, her father found her. When Dymphna refused to return with him or give up her Christian faith, he became enraged and killed her. She was only about 15 years old. Because of her story, many people who struggled with mental illness, emotional suffering, anxiety, and nervous disorders began seeking her intercession. Over time, countless pilgrims travelled to Geel for healing and comfort, and St. Dymphna became known as the patron saint of those suffering from mental and emotional distress. Her feast day is celebrated on 15 May. St. Dymphna, Pray for us 🙏🏽

Ascension of the Lord (40 Days after the Resurrection) Who truly likes to see someone leave their life, especially a person who has touched them deeply and changed them for the better? The feeling is often one of sadness, loss, and even grief. The Apostles felt this too. They stood there watching their Master ascend, knowing things would never be the same again as they had known them. But the Ascension is not a story of abandonment. Christ took flesh for our sake, and He ascended for our sake. In Him, our human nature has entered heaven. Alleluia! Humanity now has a place before the throne of God. And yet, His departure was also a beginning. If He did not ascend, the Holy Spirit would not come. He now calls us His witnesses, sending us to continue the work He began, carrying the Gospel to the ends of the earth. The Ascension reminds us that Christ has not left us alone. He remains with us through His Spirit, through His Church, and through the mission He has entrusted to us. May we never let Him down. Alleluia!
