Today marks six years since we lost John, who would have turned 80 this year. We no doubt would have gathered as a family (including five grandchildren!) to celebrate with his favorite cake. John spent his life writing about mail carriers and veterans, lonely elders and small towns, about the quiet beauty of people showing up for each other with humor and grace. In a time when so much feels uncertain, the empathy and steadiness in his music remains a familiar comfort and a reminder that the things that matter most are close to home. That belief is at the heart of the Hello in There Foundation, and thanks to this remarkable community, we’ve granted nearly $1.4 million to more than 100 organizations doing the kind of work John believed in deeply: feeding people, building stable housing, supporting recovery, and showing up after disasters with real, immediate help. John once said that he tried to look at the world through someone else’s eyes. His gentle curiosity about others, and his commitment to telling their stories with compassion, humor, and care, is something we carry with us in our work every day. We’re proud to do this in his name and grateful for the people who love John, and his music, helping us keep this work going.  We have a beautiful year of celebrations planned to honor his life, his music, and what would have been his 80th birthday, and we look forward to sharing more with you very soon. With lots of love, Fiona and Family

From the Prine Family archives: In February 2002, the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation wrote to John to thank him for performing at benefit concerts, helping to raise awareness and funds for landmine survivors and veterans. At the concerts, which were spearheaded by @emmylouharrisofficial , John played alongside collaborators including Emmylou, @elviscostello , @steveearle , the beloved Nanci Griffith, and others. Together, they understood that artists can play a role in the way we look out for one another. This was just one of many ways John used his artistic talent and voice to uplift the forgotten and overlooked. We are grateful for his lifelong attitude of kindness and his commitment to showing up for the people and causes that mattered. Did you attend these concerts? Share your memories in the comments! đź’›

It’s time to help Nashville! 🤝 Our matching campaign ends TODAY. We are matching all donations through midnight to support three organizations in Nashville providing emergency shelter, warming supplies, and hot meals to vulnerable Nashvillians - @roomintheinn & @peoplelovingnashville & @nashvillelaunchpad 💛 As of today, there are still more than 32,000 homes without electricity. In addition to people being displaced from their homes, folks are also dealing with lost wages, lack of childcare, expensive repair work, and more. In addition to grants to these organizations, we also have our immigrant and refugee neighbors on our minds. We’ve been volunteering and doing supply drops, helping grassroots, volunteer led organizations like @theremix_way with nutritious food, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and other vital needs. Finally, we are supporting @conexionamericas with funding to help their communities have access to safe and stable short term housing. In the spirit of @john_prine ’s song “Hello in There,” about looking out for our neighbors who need us most, we’re matching every dollar that comes in until midnight! Donate at the link in bio, or please consider giving directly to one of these organizations, or finding your own Nashville nonprofits to support. The city has a long way to go to a full recovery. 📸: @martinbcherry & @nashville_banner (used with permission. thank you!)

We are thrilled to welcome Megan Barry to the Hello in There Foundation’s Board of Directors! A long time friend of the Prine Family, @mayormeganbarry brings a deep love of people, a commitment to community-building, and a genuine appreciation for the power of music to bring people together, all values that John Prine embodied throughout his life and career. As Nashville’s former Mayor and a dedicated public servant, Megan understands how the work of the foundation can help to strengthen communities and create pathways for connection. We’re so grateful to have her vision, heart, and expertise as we continue building a foundation that reflects John’s generosity, humor, and belief in lifting others up. Welcome, Megan! We’re excited to work alongside you. 💛
