Our FPE Seniors wrapped up their Risk-Informed Performance Based Design course last week at the Clark School’s annual Capstone Design Expo, showing off their projects at the Xfinity Center. Special congratulations to the “Heat of Combusters” team who were awarded first place amongst the Fire Protection Engineering teams for their Open Stair Fire Protection design: Adam Brodsky, Marjorie Murray Cheston, Kendyl Lepp, and Asa Silver.

Alum Robert “Bob” C. Andrews Jr. ’80 is Fueling the Future of Fire Protection
“I’m always looking for other ways to help and other needs that can be fulfilled, for the good of fire protection engineering and the good of the fire service.”
From a childhood spent playing firefighter in his Pennsylvania front yard to joining his local volunteer fire company at 16, Andrews built his path to a successful career in fire protection engineering. A first-generation college student facing financial hardship, he found his way to Maryland’s Fire Protection Engineering program through mentorship, hands-on experience, and sheer persistence.
He went on to a decades-long career protecting high-risk industrial environments—carrying with him the practical, people-centered perspective that shaped his journey. Now he is creating opportunities for future aspiring engineers like himself to achieve those opportunities.
He created both the Dr. Robert C. Andrews, Jr., P.E. Online Course Operating Fund to underwrite curriculum development and technology acquisition and the Dr. Robert C. Andrews, Jr., P.E. Scholarship for students in the online program. Andrews also plans to donate part of his estate to the university.
“How do we make the world better through this profession I’ve enjoyed? By promoting the merits of fire protection engineering to the world at large, showing how it can dramatically reduce the risk of fire in the built environment, ultimately improving the human condition. That’s the overarching goal.”
