Final Photographs of Mirror Girl and Asami for my final project ‘Mirror Girl’

Mirror Girl Performer: Madeline Blackwell @made.line7500
Asami Performer: Isabella Hildebrand @isabellahildebrand@unioftheartslondon@lcflondon_@lcf_costumeforperformance
Project Overview:
“Mirror Girl” reimagines Hiroshi Yamamoto’s short story through a 1940s perspective, where a girl’s bond with her AI companion is showcased as a narrative of love and trust. Staged like a vintage advertisement, the project explores how Mirror Girl can ‘improve your life’, with a stylish, surreal twist.
Asami, the human, represents the heart of wartime resilience, with her design influenced by the Colossus computer, human anatomy, and WWII’s visible mending schemes. In contrast, Mirror Girl is presented in a synthetic sci-fi ballgown fit for a postmodern princess, lit up (literally) to reflect Asami’s heartbeat as their connection deepens.

After spending the last month as Costume Supervisor on Tabard Theatres production of H.M.S. Pinafore, the show has set sail! ⚓️
I was responsible for styling and sourcing costumes to the directors brief of this 1940s take on the musical. Part of the job included sourcing these authentic naval uniforms. Which I am still proud it was something I was able to achieve in the budget and time frame.
I will be posting more about this musical and the work I did but the best way to see the costumes is to watch it!
It is running until June 6th at @theatreattabard in Turnham Green.
When working on the crucible, I spent a lot of time dyeing and redyeing fabrics to match the dark colour scheme of the production. With that, the light coloured costumes the Salem girls wore to the trial showcasing their purity, stick out even on the rail. It is a level of contrast that made people question why the shift when looking at the rail alone with no context. The only other costumes that fell into the off white colour palette was the prisoner outfits. The costumes had this brightness as a showcase of their innocence yet was disheveled and broken down with the same black dye I used throughout the show.

My 3rd show at South London Theatre and my 1st show leading the design and supervision of the costumes. Most of my previous shows have been very bright or period driven, so costuming The Crucible is a very different change in direction from what I’m used to.

Two months since bake off and I’m nearly done posting photos. It’s hard to select what to post as working on such a large scale project, every photo has a costume with a challenge I worked to overcome. This one was a no brainer, as I haven’t recovered from sewing 8 sparkly aprons in one day aha. But I still love how they look! I had also made a showgirl style dress for the wonderful Steph to wear but that fell victim to the lack of fittings in distance costuming so her glamorous outfit here was sourced by Wade.✨🪩
