This booklet documents the results of a workshop conducted during an excursion to Vienna by MA Design students from the Hochschule der Künste Bern. In groups, the 25 participants explored the area around Elterleinplatz (Vienna, Hernals), enganging with the themes from the Wiener Klimahöfe project by Future Problems Architecture Studio. Each group received a postcard with a pair of guiding questions - such as narrow vs. vast city, city buzz vs. calm, and green vs. solid ground - along with a Klimatuch (a red or blue cloth indicating high or low sun exposure). Their task was to find locations that reflected the questions and document them with a photo showing the place, its use, and the perceived climate, signaled by the Klimatuch.

Wiener Klimahöfe
The city we will live in by 2050 will largely consist of the structures that exist today. Adapting them to preserve quality of life means thinking climate protection and climate adaptation together. Wiener Klimahöfe is a participatory urban project developed by Future Problems Architecture Studio. Focusing on the courtyards around Elterleinplatz in Vienna’s Hernals district, the project explores how existing urban spaces can be transformed to mitigate the effects of climate change.

A key element of the project is the use of the "Wiener Klimatuch" - a colourful cloth that marks areas with high or low sun exposure. The Wiener Klimatuch serves as visual marker to highlight microclimatic conditions and potential interventions. Additionally, the project uses postcards as a mapping device for local inhabitants, embodying the idea that „everybody is an expert.“ Residents are encouraged to share their own knowledge and observations about the space, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the urban environment.

FELDSTADT AM HEIDJÖCHL, VIENNA ~ Welcome to the field!
Feldstadt Heidjöchl proposes an urban model that takes climate protection through soil management, bio-based building construction, and climate adaptation equally into account. By preserving and recultivating large areas of the agricultural land, the project offers its inhabitants to play a part in their own food supply.

PHASES OF DEVELOPMENT
Feldstadt am Heidjöchl - Vienna
Connecting people and agriculture is the underlying principle of the urban design proposal. Agriculture, as a central element of the development, will therefore act as a point of attraction beyond the immediate surroundings and bring life to the district already before construction starts.
Early Greenery is planted in orthogonal strips to the main wind directions to reduce soil erosion and increase biodiversity. The early planting is aligned with the public squares of the later urban design and provides fully grown trees and hedges once construction is completed.
The building process is phased in seven self-sufficient districts, growing from the well-connected sides to the central fields. In this way, the urban development remains flexible to the actual housing demand of the city and leaves a chance for less soil to be built upon.

AGRICULTURE AND SOIL MANAGEMENT
Feldstadt am Heidjöchl - Vienna
Parceled into smaller entities, the project proposes a transformation of the large scale fields into bio-intensive and self-harvest agriculture, revitalizing the ground and introducing the wider neighborhood to the site before any development takes place.
Restraining urban development to the perimeter leaves a widely open field of 10 hectares with bio-intensive agriculture, self-harvesting areas, and a large orchard in the center. Raised garden beds and fruit trees also reappear throughout the network of streets and squares in the Feldstadt.
The linear Living Line house types open up towards the central field, while slightly taller Community Houses provide collective spaces in direct adjacency to self-harvesting areas and fields.
