Sean’s testimonial:
“It’s crazy to think it’s been over three years since I first walked into Functional Patterns Melbourne. Before FP, I spent 15 years slogging through the usual gym grind—bench presses, deadlifts, endless cardio—you name it—and my body felt absolutely wrecked. I had constant aches in my neck, throbbing headaches, a stiff back, and even my ankles and knees would revolt on me. Some mornings, I’d drag myself into work, barely able to focus. I went to multiple physios, but they all focused on pain management rather than actually helping me get better—and it never felt right.
Since starting FP, those headaches and nagging pains have almost completely vanished. I can power through long workdays without discomfort, and my posture feels more natural than ever. Filippo at FP Melbourne has tailored each session precisely to my needs—focusing on the “big four” movements (standing, walking, running, and throwing) and helping to address years of joint calcification. I even convinced my wife to join, and now we work out together!
PS: I still look forward to every session—the entire @fp_melbourne team is fantastic; they truly care about every client.”

Tim's Testimonial - Functional Patterns has been life changing. Beyond the dramatic posture improvements I've noticed, the chronic pain in my right shoulder has disappeared, I have way more mobility (I can now turn my head all the way to the right), I’ve grown taller due to the decompression of my spine and I’ve put on 5kg of muscle over the last few months. Before FP, my body felt weak and brittle, now it feels strong and sturdy. I can now rely on my body to do things I once found challenging (like lifting heavy objects) which has made me into a more confident person.
Chronic shoulder pain levels
Before: 5/10
After: 0/10
Lack of mobility in the head/neck: could only turn head 50% to the right before, now 100% rotation.

*SCOLIOSIS AND PAIN RESULTS*
With my client @ryderdavenport
Before: May 2021
After: Dec 2021
Testimonial: Before finding Functional patterns I dealt with chronic thoracic /lumbar back pain due to two L4 fractures and 1 L5 fracture while participating in high-level training and athletic tournaments, which would affect my day-to-day life and activities. I also had a series of other health problems such as extremely compressed knees and hip pain which I saw chiropractors & physiotherapists without finding any long-term relief. This lead me to quit my real estate job and all sports due to not being able to function without pain on a day-to-day basis. Before finding functional patterns I was competing in athletics events for 100 and 200-meter sprints, basketball games on the weekend, and boxing training during the week. While participating in all this I was taking pain medication daily for roughly a year to help monitor and control the pain to a lower level so I could compete in the sports I loved. The pains I was dealing with at such a young age were nothing I’ve ever experienced, my day-to-day life was a constant struggle with just feeling good enough to get out of bed. At this stage, I had almost given up on all my health problems when I found functional patterns. After watching their results and transformations I went all in with Fiachra training 2-3 times a week. Since then I have had my ups and downs good and bad weeks but slowly started to see improvements and fewer pains, I have finally got to a stage where I can move and function as a normal human. I have gotten to the point where I could physically help my father through the floods recently in Echuca without being limited by my body’s problems from lifting heavy equipment and physically being able to help where needed. Although I still have a long way to go I am confident functional patterns will continue to help and improve my quality of life as my pain has reduced incredibly since starting. Since joining FP I have no longer take any form of pain medication and I trust the FP team to resolve my problems 100%

RG Bar Class starting June 18th. This is the second intake of our 6 week progression and there’s already a few people on the list. We’re capping the class at 6 participants to keep the coaching and cueing as accurate as possible.
The RG Bar is designed to improve rotational strength, coordination, core integration, posture, balance, and force transfer through movement. The goal is to teach your body to work together as one connected system rather than isolating muscles.
The class is beginner to intermediate friendly, with progressions scaled week by week to build people up properly.
If you want to join, click the link in bio, head to Group Classes, select the May 18th intake, and secure your spot. Payment is made upfront for the full 6 week block. Spots will go quickly. #functionalpatterns #groupclasses #strength #conditioning #brunswick
Over the past few months we’ve had more and more people walk through the doors after years of trying different approaches with little to no lasting change.
Hip pain.
Knee pain.
Scoliosis.
Chronic joint pain.
Strength loss.
Movement decline.
Years of physios, massage, chiro and conventional training.
A common theme we hear is that many people had started accepting deterioration as normal.
One thing Filippo consistently does well is help clients understand the mental framework needed to work through long term dysfunction and chronic pain patterns. Not just what to do, but why they’re doing it, what behaviours are reinforcing the issue, and what it actually takes to create lasting change.
His approach combines patience, structure and detailed movement analysis with education that helps people reconnect to their body and better understand how their habits, posture and movement patterns influence their health over time.
These reviews speak for themselves:
• Pain reduction after years of failed treatments
• Improved posture and movement quality
• Increased strength and physical confidence
• Returning to hiking, training and daily life with less limitation
• Long term changes people can actually feel and maintain
Appreciate the work you do @filippo_tommaso_busa
If you’ve been stuck in cycles of temporary relief and recurring pain, this may be the sign to start approaching your body differently.

Four months with Phillip. One mission: get him out of chronic hip pain.
He came to @fp_melbourne fed up — frustrated by treatments that weren’t working, desperate for a real solution.
His story sounded a lot like mine from my early twenties, which made this one personal.
Watching him start to overcome what once felt impossible using @functionalpatterns could not have been more rewarding.

Trainer spotlight this week is our experienced trainer @steve_pitros who works exceptionally well with people dealing with chronic pain, injuries, and long-term movement issues, especially those who haven’t had success with physio, pilates, or traditional training. He takes the time to explain what’s actually going on in your body, then works through things in a structured way so you’re not just chasing short-term relief but building something that lasts.
A lot of people come to him after years of frustration and start to see real changes. Less pain, better movement, and more confidence in how their body feels day to day. He pays close attention to the details and makes sure things are done properly, which is why the results tend to stick.
He’s great with kids, athletes and everyone in between which makes him a great all-rounder across the board.

KNEE PAIN AND POSTURE RESULTS
My client Troy has been putting in the work to get on top of his knee pain that couldn’t be remedied using traditional means. This guy goes hard in the paint and has been a model client during the process. Eliminating other forms of training, holding to the dietary protocols and training hard in his own time.
Before (pics 7/1/25)
Knee pain:
At rest: 2/10
During moderate training: 5/10
Intense training: 9/10
After FP (pics 22/4/26)
Pain: 0/10
Upper trap pain while hiking
Before: 6/10
After: 1/10
Posture improvements
Kypholordosis : more neutral spine
Scapular wing: not present
Cervical hyperextension: improved
Troy’s words: “Before starting FP I had done traditional weight training for years (bench press, chin-ups, deadlifts, squats etc) and also trained to run a marathon. I had occasional issues with my back when working out and extreme pain in my knees when I ran too much. I went to the osteo a couple times for my knees which helped ease the pain temporarily but would just get worse every time I ran, as I wasn’t addressing the root cause. By the end of the marathon I was in agony and knew I had to make a change to my exercise routine.
I began 1:1 training at FP as well as following their 10-week online course. Just over 12 months later, I feel like my life has completely changed. My posture has improved dramatically, I never get any pain or discomfort with my movements and I have a much better understanding of how my body and biomechanics works.
I feel like my body moves in a way that is much more aligned with how humans are supposed to move based on our evolutionary biology, and as a result I’m finding many unexpected flow-on benefits. I can breathe better, digest food easier and my baseline mental state is much better, along with many other subtle but impactful changes. FP takes a completely different approach to any other training programs I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot) and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their physical (or mental) state.”

Our 6-week group classes run every Wednesday evening and consistently sell out each block.
Open to all levels, from no experience through to intermediate. We focus on the fundamentals of standing, walking, running and throwing, building an understanding of how to organise tension in the body so movement becomes more efficient.
The next block starts 22 April and is already half booked. Run by @fiachra_eviston
If you’re keen to get in, book now. Link in bio.
Some of our dedicated clients working with their trainers, chipping away at what’s not working and sculpting something worthwhile bit by bit. Improving your mechanics has a knock-on effect on how you show up in all other arenas of life. This is the epitome of FP. Shout out to the clients putting in the work to improve their lives and everyone else’s as a result.

LOWER BACK PAIN, POSTURE & RUNNING IMPROVEMENTS
Before: February 2025
After: January 2026
Emilee came to @fp_melbourne to address lower back pain from a disc bulge and improve her running.
The greatest changes occurred in her intra-abdominal pressure and spinal decompression, supported by glute and leg retensioning.
She trained with me weekly, trained independently, and adhered fully to protocols (cut coffee, stopped stretching, ceased running, already eating healthily).
She can now run pain-free and is experimenting with sprinting and interval work rather than long distance to keep her body strong, balanced, and resilient.
Before FP: • Lower back pain 5/10
After FP: • Lower back pain 0/10
Structural improvements:
✅ Improved joint stacking
✅ Improved cervical and forward head positioning
✅ Reduced knee hyperextension
✅ Improved frontline engagement
✅ Improved thoracic extension
Prior training: CrossFit, HIIT, running, strength training, Pilates
Prior pain relief: Chiropractor, massage, mobility/stretching, osteotherapy
Testimonial:
“I came to FP as I had long term bulging disc and lower back pain. I also had nerve pain in my right leg and foot. I now very rarely have back pain and I do not have the nerve pain. I notice how I sit and stand whereas before I never paid any attention to my posture. I think this has also helped reduce my neck pain while at work. My quality of life has greatly improved since starting FP and I now train with intention.”

JEN, LOWER BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN AND HIP PAIN IMPROVEMENTS
Before - Jan 2022
After photo - Dec 2025 (approximately 2 years of virtual training)
Jen is a client who came to @fp_melbourne looking to address her aches and pains, along with improving her posture and movement imbalances. She is fairly active and works as a dentist, which meant standing and operating on patients all day. She would experience pain while at work and ultimately wasn’t able to adapt to the demands of her work.
@jen.calleja initially worked with Jen for the first 6 months and helped lay the foundation to the changes you see here.
Prior training methods: Yoga, Pilates, swimming, running, gym classes, cycling.
Testimonial: I came to Functional Patterns because I wanted to move better without pain, but I didn’t realise how much I had been compensating until I started. Before FP I had lower back pain to the point where I couldn’t move off the floor. I would get a build up of neck pain and stiffness, shoulder tension from working as a dentist, and also developed aches and pains in my hip. I had poor flexibility and couldn’t reach my toes. Now I have minimal to no pain. In doing FP it quickly became clear that this wasn’t just training but learning how my body actually functions. Movements that once felt tight or forced started to feel more natural and connected. I became more aware of how I stand, walk, train, and even how I carry myself through the day. What I love most about Functional Patterns is the intention behind every exercise. There’s a reason for everything. It’s not about pushing harder, it’s about moving smarter. I feel more balanced, more grounded, and more confident in my body than I have in a long time. I can now work and play sports without the back and neck aches and pains I would get in the past.
Before FP:
- Lower back pain 8/10
- Neck pain 5/10.
- Hip pain 5/10
After FP:
- Lower back pain 0/10
- Neck pain 0/10
- Hip pain 0/10
