I’m sending out all the March rewards for Patre<3n this week and I wanted to show them off! Last month I took a deep dive learning all about non-flying mammal pollination in southern Africa, specifically in Fynbos ecosystems. My favourite part of illustrating for my patrons is always learning more about the animals and finding interesting journal articles. It’s a bit like a throwback to university, only instead of reading social science paper I get to learn about critters!
Biodiversity in the fynbos is really incredible. There are around 9000 different plant species in this tiny area, which make up an entire floral kingdom. And a large majority of these species is endemic to the western Cape and found nowhere else. The relationships between organisms is complex, and pollination by rodents and other small mammals is an important part of it.
