Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said Friday school abduction in Orire Local Government Area exposed a critical failure in intelligence gathering and information-sharing, warning residents against withholding vital security information from authorities.
Makinde spoke on Saturday in Ibadan during the inauguration of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Nigeria Police Force and the commissioning of its headquarters, coming a day after the abduction incident.
“From what we know so far about yesterday’s incident in Orire Local Government, there is still a big gap in giving timely information to security agencies. When you see strange movements or suspicious behaviour, please report it,” the governor said.
He said preliminary findings indicated that suspicious activities were not promptly reported, undermining efforts to prevent the incident.
he governor stressed that improved collaboration between residents and security agencies was essential, noting that government alone could not guarantee safety without public cooperation.
He described the launch of the specialised unit as a strategic response to rising cases of kidnapping and violent crimes, particularly in light of recent security challenges in the state.
According to Makinde, the VCRU is the first of its kind in the South-West and reflects a renewed commitment to strengthening the state’s security architecture.

LPresident Bola Tinubu has announced the killing of a senior Islamic State leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, during a joint operation carried out by Nigerian and United States forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement personally signed on Saturday, Tinubu said the operation marked “a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism” between both countries.
The President said Nigerian troops, working with the US Armed Forces, carried out “a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State.”
He added that “early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin.”

A statement by NAPTIP Press and Public Relations officer, Mr Vincent Adekoye, in Abuja on Friday, disclosed that the convicts were based in Abuja.
Adekoye said that the convicts were handed life imprisonment, without the option of fine, by Justice S.M. Mayana of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court 46, Apo, Abuja, following their arraignment by NAPTIP.
He said that the convicts were arraigned in line with the provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act, 2025.

Why I stopped lifting people up — Singer Tope Alabi
During a ministration, gospel singer Tope Alabi shared why she no longer takes it upon herself to help elevate other artistes, recounting past experiences that discouraged her.
She explained that she once met a talented female singer and decided to support her career by relocating her, along with her husband and children, to Lagos. According to her, she chose to keep them close so they could face challenges together, including what she described as spiritual issues.
“I met a lady that knows how to sing, i wanted to lift her, so i brought her, her kids and husband to Lagos. i don’t want to mention her name so you guys won’t know who she is, i told her we will be staying together, any spiritual problems should come and face us together.”
She also said she handled payments for the lady in a way that ensured she was properly compensated, especially in situations where direct payment was not arranged.
“i always charge her money together with mine so i will collect it and pay it to her because they don’t want to pay her separately.”
However, she noted that problems later arose within the arrangement, particularly involving the woman’s husband, who she claimed resisted certain aspects of their involvement.
“when they wanted to start their drama, the husband knows how to play keyboard and gangan, he said they don’t play at the back of women in their family.”
Tope Alabi added that she had similar experiences with another lady she tried to help, saying both situations eventually led to misunderstandings and opposition from the beneficiaries.
“i helped another lady like that too, she and her husband were against me after helping them that’s why i have stopped…”
