This period also saw the emergence of place-based funding, bringing communities together to help shape funding priorities and decisions for their own areas, an approach that continues to influence our work today. IVAR (the Institute for Voluntary Action Research) promotes open and trusting grantmaking, encouraging funders to share power, centre community voice, and move beyond compliance-focused governance. Foundation Scotland is a proud signatory to IVARโ€™s principles, and this case study reflects what that commitment looks like in practice. Aligned with IVARโ€™s open and trusting principles, the Nadara Westfield Wind Farm Community Fund Panel handed decision-making directly to the community, via Cardenden Decides, a participatory grantmaking event. Cardenden Decides is not a one-off story. It is a replicable model showing what changes when funders act on IVARโ€™s principles. Head to our website to read more (link in bio).

From one employee and volunteers running the Caledonian Challenge (an event that raised over ยฃ13 million for communities) to today, when we are now supporting hundreds of grassroots projects across Scotland, itโ€™s been an incredible journey. While the Challenge ended in 2018, its legacy still lives on in the projects it supported and the people it inspired. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of our story so far, and weโ€™re excited to meet new people and partners ready to help communities thrive for the next 30 years. #FoundationScotland #30Years #Community #Philanthropy #CaledonianChallenge

A million reasons to celebrate community support ๐Ÿฅณ Nadara Glenkerie Wind Farm Fund has passes ยฃ1 million milestone with latest round of community awards in Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire. Four new grants to local community projects have marked a funding milestone for the Nadara Glenkerie Wind Farm Fund, bringing its total investment in local communities since 2014 to over ยฃ1 million. Since the first award in 2014, a ยฃ2000 grant to Drumelzier Village Hall, the Fund has grown in ambition and impact. Major funding awards have included ยฃ50,000 to Upper Tweed Community Enterprise towards the capital costs of extending the Broughton Village Store, and the Fundโ€™s largest single award of ยฃ62,500 to Tweedsmuir Development Company to contribute to the costs of the first phase of the Crook Inn Cafรฉ and Community Hub. The scale and variety of the Fundโ€™s impact is also evident in the most recent awards round, where four projects across the Glenkerie area shared a total of ยฃ42,000. The next deadline for community organisations to apply for funding is 15th of July 2026. - head to our website to find out more. #community #scotlandscommunityfoundation #foundationscotland #funding #scotland

Pilots send a powerful signal to communities: that their ideas are worth testing, that failure (and learning) is acceptable, and that sustainable change takes time to build. Cockburnspath Village Hall were awarded a grant for a pilot project to employ a local chef or cook for six hours per week. The aim was to restore the cafรฉ to its full three-hour weekly opening, bring greater consistency and quality to the food on offer, and in doing so, reinvigorate its role as a community hub. This project is a strong example of why pilot funding plays such an important role in the development of community services. Pilots allow communities alike to test new approaches, gather evidence, and make informed decisions about sustainability, all before committing to long-term funding. For funders, investing in a well-designed pilot reduces risk while maximising the potential for long-term impact. The evidence generated, quantitative data on footfall and sales, alongside qualitative feedback on community wellbeing, creates a compelling case for future investment. In Cockburnspath, the Tuesday cafรฉ is already delivering that change, one warm, full table at a time. Cockburnspath Village Hall received the grant of ยฃ8,198 from Foresight Kinegar, one of the six funds administered by Foundation Scotland through the Coโ€™path & Cove Community Fund. #scottishfunding #scotland #communityfoundation #foundationscotland #scotlandscommunityfoundation

The Vattenfall Unlock Our Future Fund has completed seven years of grant-making, supporting community-led climate action projects across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. In its seventh year, the fund reached two major milestones: ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ง ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ฌ to date and ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ยฃ๐Ÿ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง in total funding awarded. It was great to see several new groups supported in this area, delivering practical projects of this kind โ€“ some modest and some very technical and ambitious - to reduce energy demand and improve the thermal comfort of several important community buildings. Ellon Community Allotments and Gairn Community Garden, a couple of the climate action projects delivered in the past year, show the impact of different scales of projects and the many additional benefits they can bring.
