first, even if they’re a couple rooms away, kids may still hear you and be listening into your conversations 💛 (nothing bad was said here - just wanted to call that out because some convos should be more private) Something that you may experience as a foster parent is a kid arriving on or very close to their birthday. I share so you can be prepared and confident in navigating these moments. something you can do to be prepared is keep general birthday decorating supplies on hand (streamers, candles, balloons). for younger school age kids, ask the teacher if it’s normal for kids to bring in favors or a treat Of course, understand kids may have a variety of feelings on the day - some may want to celebrate, some may not, some may fall somewhere in the middle. 🤔Tell me your other surprises you’ve experienced in the comments! 👇

🌈 The more you know If you work with kids, please become informed on what rights kids in foster care have in your state! These can informe the care you provide and also help advocate for the youth and their rights. Every state has its own set of bill of rights for youth - so be sure you check and know yours! (of course, in the example in this video there could nuance here and more to this story, but maybe not. maybe it’s just as simple as no one has asked about these visits and initiated the process to get them started for the youth.) It is foster care awareness month, and my goal is to turn awareness into community action. Knowing youth rights in your state is a way to bring awareness to yourself, others you work with, and ultimately better support the kids that you come into contact with. Thank you @fosterclub for all you do to help youth impacted by foster care! 💛🙏 (please give them a follow to show your support and stay informed)
