A primary design feature in both projects are the support pilotis. They are a direct attempt to synthesize Le Corbusier’s modernist principles with Brazilian colonial traditions. Pilotis are structural columns that lift a building above the ground, creating open space underneath and a sense of lightness.
Costa’s pilotis made of local eucalyptus mimic the organic spread of trees to integrate the hotel into its forested setting, while Niemeyer’s concrete supports provide a rhythmic, geometric skeleton for his monumental urban design.

In 1952, architects Walter Machado and Jefferson Lodi, graduates of the architecture school at UFMG, designed this residence in Belo Horizonte, Brazil for the couple Milton and Gilda Mourão, a doctor and fine artist. The residence was inspired by the modern Pampulha complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer and was constructed on the plot of land adjacent to the family’s eclectic mansion.

Identity I designed back in 2023 for Birch & Bloom, the farm-to-table steakhouse attached to Kimpton The Forum Hotel in Charlottesville, Virginia. After designing the identity for the hotel with the PG&Co team, we were tasked to develop the branding of both F&B outlets on property. Birch & Bloom serves specially crafted menus of seasonal ingredients and curated organic wines from the Mid-Atlantic region. The identity was inspired by early 1900s American folk art and elevated through a touch of Victorian modernism.

Back in 2023, we drove a few hours from São Paulo to Morro Pedra Grande to shoot for Burberry. We reached a point where the car couldn’t continue up the trail due to heavy rains the previous week. So the final part of the trail, we had to carry all of our gear up to the summit. As we rounded the last turn and could begin to see the horizon line, we were greeted with the strongest wind I’ve felt since living through East Coast hurricanes back in the US. Everything that we had planned pre-pro for the shoot had to shift direction on the fly. We embraced this obstacle, simplified and made the power of Mother Nature the focus of the film. Shooting at high frame rate gave the gusts of wind a surreal feeling. Nature truly reminds us to be spontaneous.

A few photographs I shot while on a visit in Belo Horizonte, Brazil back in 2023. I was reminded of this work this morning when I was going through my library and came across an old MO’DULO (publication started by Niemeyer) Issue 42 from 1976 that featured this project. Niemeyer was directly inspired by the mountain range surrounding the city and translated them into the church’s iconic curved roof in reinforced concrete. This form was a controversial design choice that went against the traditional church structures of that time (and even until today).

📂 Crowne Plaza Rebrand

This was a very extensive rebrand I worked on with the PG&Co and IHG team. With a brand like Crowne Plaza, which already had a rich history and foundation to build from, we were able to analyze the current logos and strategically refine these branding elements. We thinned out the line-weight of the wordmark to give it a more timeless look, while redesigning the flag and shifting the wind direction to represent the brands movement into the future. Sometimes these subtle shifts are what create dramatic improvements for global brands at this scale.
