I wanted to write about Andrea Gibson. All of my poetry friends are well aware that they recently passed. If you are unaware of their work please look them up. I wrote poetry in high school but I didn't discover spoken word until 2009 when I was a senior. Through YouTube I saw people like Andrea speak across the country with a startling authenticity and approachability. They reached me, living in my no traffic light town in Pennsylvania, they said this poetry thing is real, it's important and it's worth pursuing. I was fortunate enough after moving to Colorado in 2016 to see them read several times including a book release on my home open mic stage at the now closed Innisfree Cafe in Boulder. We are fortunate to have not only their books but many many recordings of their poetry online where they first reached me. You can hear them read their words like no one else can. They were a lightning bug you could follow home in the dark. I wouldn't be the poet or the person I am today without their work.
