The organisations that are part of the “Rede de Mini Florestas de Portugal” are coming together for a day of community, connection, and nature.
On 23 May, we will gather with members of this wonderful network which has already planted 62 mini forests across the country.
Join us to learn more about Miyawaki forests and to help care for one of our mini forests as we prepare it for the arrival of summer.
It will be a moment to connect, exchange ideas, and spend time together outdoors.
Please bring water, a hat, and wear comfortable clothes.

Com entusiasmo e curiosidade, cerca de 80 jovens da Academia do Saber juntaram-se esta 2ª feira na Floresta Miyawaki de Benfica para uma tarde de descoberta e contacto com a natureza.
Embora ainda jovem, esta floresta foi o cenário ideal para uma atividade prática de aplicação de mulching, cobertura natural feita de madeira triturada e borras de café que ajuda a proteger o solo e a reduzir a necessidade de adubos químicos nos espaços verdes da freguesia. O Vogal dos Espaços Verdes, Hernâni Silva, marcou presença na iniciativa, participando ativamente e testemunhando o entusiasmo dos jovens.
Este projeto, desenvolvido com o apoio da Forest Impact e financiado pela Fujitsu, demonstra como a educação ambiental e o envolvimento da comunidade podem cultivar um futuro mais verde e sustentável para Benfica.

Planted in January 2024 thanks to *Adapt Cascais* funding, our tiny Miyawaki forest is now over two years old and thriving! As spring begins, it’s bursting with life, proving that a dense, native ecosystem can flourish with just rainwater and only 4-5 waterings per year.
By the end of 2026, we’ll be planting two more of these biodiversity hotspots in the Cascais Municipality, in urban areas where native species and real ecosystems are needed most.
You may have noticed we’ve been quiet on social media, well, don’t worry, it’s only because we’ve been busy behind the scenes, finalising even more projects for our incredible community. Stay tuned for updates!

Why are so many trees falling after heavy rain?
It’s not just the wind.
After long periods of rain, soils become saturated and trees lose stability.
When soil is waterlogged:
• Roots lose grip
• Oxygen in the soil drops
• Fine anchoring roots weaken
• The tree becomes heavier above and weaker below
A gust of wind can then be enough to cause sudden uprooting , often after the storm, not during it.
This is where forests make a difference.
Planting isolated trees is not the same as planting a forest.
In a forest ecosystem:
• Roots interlock and support each other
• Diverse plants improve soil structure and drainage
• Organic matter feeds fungi and microorganisms
• Water is absorbed, stored, and released more slowly
Healthy forests create stable soils, not just green canopies.
As rainfall patterns become more intense and irregular, the question is no longer how many trees we plant but how we build resilient ecosystems.

Our 2026 couldn’t have started on a better note!
We have two more Miyawaki forests in the making this year.
Thanks to the AdaptCascais 2026 Fund, we’ll be able to plant two new Miyawaki forests in the municipality of Cascais, helping bring more nature, biodiversity, and climate resilience to the area.
We’re currently taking care of the formal steps, and we’ll share more details soon.
