He spent 20 years as a first-call pedal steel player in New York and LA before moving to Boston, where he now teaches at Berklee. In 2020 he was nominated for Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year. His 2023 album Memorial is pedal steel, but mostly not the way you’re picturing it. Improvised, spacious, more ECM than Grand Ole Opry.
The band is totally stacked: Kevin Barry on guitar (Ray LaMontagne, Paula Cole), Zachariah Hickman on bass (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne), John Sands on drums (Aimee Mann).
Hickman was also up for AMA Instrumentalist of the Year that year. Two of five nominees, on a random Wednesday in Cambridge.
