Created a character and logo for @nene_sweets28 and also painted them a version on canvas for their shop which is opening right near Ikejiri-Ohashi station. Always a pleasure to see project reach the light of day 😄 Visit their profile for info on their Grand Opening!🍓🍰🍪🍓
Grab some stickers of my character ショ–トくん when you stop by 😎

Another brick, another step, another increment closer. If we’re moving in the direction we want, the effects accumulate.

Sometimes we miss a beat or play a wrong note in music, and sometimes we make a mark or use a color we didn’t intend to with art. As Miles Davis expressed in different words, what we do next determines if those mishaps are registered as mistakes.

Working within constraints to explore color and composition options is a great way to make low stakes commitments to ideas, all in service of final pieces of work.

The iterative process in art, also known as “doing the work” to many, is both exhaustive and exploratory, allowing creatives to see their ideas in some tangible form, as well as to see what subtle variations in color and form yield. It can be a step that many would like to skip, and what might seem tedious or boring, but it’s a fruitful endeavor nonetheless, and can be meditative as well. The overarching goal of finishing a piece requires that we press pause on it for a bit, or briefly forgot it, while we give ourselves freedom to swim around a bit to figure out those next steps.

For most of my artistic output, color has been an integral part of how I see the world and what I make. Monochrome, as simplistic as it seems, is a challenge in and of itself. Add color to the mix and options quickly multiply, making the search for balance (or imbalance depending on the goal) nothing less than an engaging exploration. Something quite different from what I usually share illustration-wise has been simmering on the backburner. Let me know if you’d like to see more. 🔐

Part of the risograph printing process means dialing in values for each color layer of an illustration, and listening to the expertise of the press one is working with. What worked in Photoshop will almost always have to be adjusted at the press, with some parts of a given color layer becoming less important, or even unnecessary for the overall print balance. Seeing the grainy final versions of each layer come out in the test prints offers clarity for adjustment, and that whiff of accomplishment before the full print run has been completed. Maybe it’s the unintentional nod to Seurat & Signac’s pointillism, but the inherent qualities of riso printing serve as a reminder that final representation of an idea often has to give credit to what isn’t there and what isn’t “perfect.”
