While filming for a video project in his late thirties, Brenes suffered what he considered a career-ending knee injury, blowing out his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in one slam. Mentally, he was preparing to never skate again. Following reconstructive knee surgery, he gravitated to the stationary bike. Wanting to get out into the world, a commuter bike followed. Before long, he was fully hooked. His favorite thing about cycling? He was suddenly strong enough to return to skating. “Skateboarding saved my life, and cycling saved my skating” is the way that Brenes describes his renaissance.

Apparently this is called a stroboscopic effect. Essentially popping flash to freeze multiple stages of motion while leaving the shutter open. I had no idea how I got to this mode but I guess I need to master it more now. First try and with a lot of photoshop, it came out okay. Oh yeah…2nd pic is just Phil. Who gives a shit about that photo 😆
