From the moment Damiani and physical artist Luisa Saraíva appear on stage and hand each other a heavy boulder, the performance builds to a climax of energy in which the largest boulder on the floor has to be destroyed. (...) Some images are of a disturbing beauty. Saraiva’s hands, adorned with rings on every finger, and Damiani’s bare back remind you of the vulnerability and beauty of the body that needs protection. Those who love punk like me will enjoy the pounding on the drum set and the search for the right voice. You watch and listen to a vignettes full of contrast that speak of willpower and a harsh kind of poetry that will keep you thinking long after. Who’s allowed to give the blow, and who receives it in today’s society? We make music. We make noise. We queered a repertoire of call and response from old Italian songs sung by men. We hail from the mountains. We meet Gargi Bhattacharya’s heartbrokeness as a revolutionary political consciousness. In the end, a red light shines through the crack; be careful, it is so warm and beautiful it may blind. Limestone rocks from Belgium perform in this piece, traversing their territories and histories. 𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒂𝒔𝒕!! The dancing mask this magic beard. The show centres on the forgotten folk saint Sint Ontkommer, also called Wilgefortis of Portugal. Known to be the protector of women who wanted to leave abusive relationships and gender-non-confirm folks. People who existed in the past but of whom there’s nearly no trace of in official records. This figure is captured in a surreal fun cameo in Freak Orlando by Ulrike Ottinger. We asked ourselves what Wilgefortis would look like today. How would they move and speak. The over-the-top screaming images of Ottinger led us. I brought in my experience of making feminist psycho-fables through my work with the feminist group Le Nemesiache. We’re in much need of the saint today. While we manually work on rocks for the duration of the piece, we create an operatic tribute to Wilgefortis.
