Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) is one of the most influential composers in the history of Italian opera. Known for his sweeping melodies, vivid orchestration, and deeply human storytelling, Puccini wrote music that places the orchestra and the voice in constant emotional dialogue. His operas focus on real people and powerful feelings.
Our upcoming co‑production with Fargo-Moorhead Opera features Puccini’s one‑act opera Il Tabarro, followed by music from some of his most beloved works including Suor Angelica, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and La Rondine. Together, these pieces showcase the remarkable emotional range of Puccini’s music, from intimate tenderness to sweeping dramatic intensity.

You may have already seen @fmopera 's cast announcement, but if you haven’t had a chance, we are excited to share the incredible vocalists leading our upcoming co‑production of Il Tabarro, part of a weekend celebrating the music of Giacomo Puccini, presented by Fargo‑Moorhead Opera and the Fargo‑Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.
✨ Heather Hjelle, soprano, as Giorgetta
✨ Harold Meers, tenor, as Luigi
✨ Megan Potter, mezzo‑soprano, as La Frugola
✨ Matthew Hanscom, baritone, as Michele
Set on a working barge along the Seine in Paris around 1910, Il Tabarro unfolds as day turns to dusk. Stevedores unload cargo, music drifts across the river, and beneath the rhythms of everyday life, tensions quietly simmer. Michele, the barge’s owner, and his wife Giorgetta are bound together by loss yet emotionally distant. Luigi, a young dockworker, carries his own dreams and longings, while La Frugola offers a glimpse of warmth, humor, and hope amid the hardship.
As the opera progresses, unspoken desires rise to the surface, relationships are tested, and Puccini’s music draws us deep into a world where love, memory, and longing collide. Compact, cinematic, and intensely human, Il Tabarro is a masterclass in musical storytelling.

✨ Something Special Is Coming This April ✨
This April 25 & 26, we are thrilled to share an exciting co-production with the @fmopera celebrating the music of Giacomo Puccini.
The collaboration features Puccini’s gripping one‑act opera Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a dark and intimate story set on a Parisian barge. Centered on a strained marriage, a secret love affair, and the devastating consequences of jealousy and loss, Il Tabarro is compact, intense, and powerfully dramatic. The program will also include additional beloved arias and orchestral selections by Puccini, showcasing the beauty of his music.
This program brings together two local arts organizations, shared creative vision, and a passion for storytelling through music. Whether you are a longtime opera lover or simply curious to experience something new, this is a wonderful place to begin.
