Join SARA’S and Roxy Cinema (@roxycinemanyc ) for the third iteration of Film Club: “Why Do I Live Like This?” a two-day screening of four shorts and a series all focused on modern life. Today April 17, 9:30pm and Saturday April 18, 9:45pm. Featuring works by Asher Bentley (@asherhilarious ), Creston Brown (#crestonbrown), Taylor Ervin (@the_yearbook_committee ), Clay Mills (@claythemills ) and Jesse Zhou (@fml.jesse ). -— BEAUTIFUL ROOM IN VIBRANT AND CULTURAL NEIGHBORHOOD — AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY (2025) ~40 min in total Directed by Jesse Zhou Steven’s roommate is dead. The police say his death is a suicide, but Steven is skeptical. After a rendezvous with his roommate’s most recent fling turns into an entanglement of their own, Steven succumbs to a harebrained conspiracy alongside her, who may know more about the death than she lets on. JESSE ZHOU is a first generation Chinese American filmmaker. Currently based in New York but coming of age between South Florida, New Jersey, and Chicago, his work reflects his transient and ever-shifting upbringing. He has written and directed two short films and is currently developing three feature scripts. Jesse enjoys crafting stories about complicated people looking for brief moments of solace and connection in the turbulent river of existence. ROXY CINEMA is an Art Deco-inspired arthouse cinema located in downtown Manhattan specializing in first-run independent films, rare archival prints and 35mm cult classics. It also runs special cultural programming including film series, director and actor Q&A’s, and artist collaborations. SARA’S is a New York gallery founded by Sara Blazej in 2023. Film Club is the gallery’s ongoing film programming, taking place at partnering institutions throughout the city. Organized in collaboration with invited curators, artists, and filmmakers, the series highlights a range of moving image work across experimental film, video art, and documentary. Join us at the Roxy Cinema for Film Club III, “Why Do I Live Like this?” curated by Clay Mills. Featuring films by Asher Bentley, Creston Brown, Taylor Ervin, Clay Mills and Jesse Zhou. Screening Friday, April 17, 9:30pm followed by a full lineup director Q&A! Tickets $19 on Roxy’s site, link in bio. -— A screening of 4 shorts and a series, all focused on modern life. Presented by SARA’S and the Roxy Cinema. Featuring “Art Boy” by Taylor Ervin, “Our Friend Just Died” by Asher Bentley and Clay Mills, “Little People” by Creston Brown, “My Soul is a Cage on the Outside of My Body” by Clay Mills, and “Beautiful Room in Vibrant And Cultural Neighborhood — Available Immediately” by Jesse Zhou. Modern life does not satisfy. The happiness we make for ourselves is ersatz, filling in for a mythical good life, which for the most part, no one is really interested in anymore. How then, do people continue to live, despite it all? This is a survey of new American filmmaking at a time when the way people have lived the past 40 years is in the midst of breaking down, making way for something new. These four films and one series take narrative, observation and humor as their methods to find where life is not meeting its own parameters, leaving the audience with one question: “why do I live like this?” @claythemills @asherhilarious @the_yearbook_committee crestonnn @fml.jesse @roxycinemanyc

best and worst year of my life. grateful and privileged to do, see, and feel all that i have and will continue to. photos in frames taken by me in nyc, shanghai, sakawa beach, berlin, and a small town in tuscany. other moments from the roxy, tennessee and the damn phone. next year im making a feature and quelling the turbulence in the soul while simultaneously becoming more productively evil.
