What stood out to me most among the hot rods at this year’s SUNBEACH SANDFLATS was just how much the level of the 4-Banger class has risen. Purpose-built race machines are becoming more common, and even OHV conversion heads are no longer unusual. With that in mind, we picked out three cars that drew particular attention in the 4-Banger class.

A true Fly Wheels-style guide to the iconic customs that shaped the history of custom cars.
For the first installment, Rik takes a closer look at Nick Matranga’s 1940 Mercury — the Barris-built custom that went on to heavily influence the later HIROHATA MERC.
In addition, Rik also explains the meaning behind the term
“Speed-Boat Stance”
— a phrase that frequently appears throughout his articles, and one that I personally have always loved — using rare period photographs from the era.
