Septober presents: Friendship Next of Kin11 October 2025 | The Commons, Muizenberg | Cape Town @the_commons_muizenberg In 1969 South African drummer Selwyn Lissack got together with Mongezi Feza, Harry Miller, Kenneth Terroade, Mike Osbourne, Louis Moholo and Earl Freeman. These musicians were some of the greatest creators of an avante garde heritage and scene that we love and find resonance with. Big band, collective individualism, free jazz symphony like structures as friendship. With friendship moments like Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breathe in mind, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra and Terroade’s earlier album Love’s Rejoice, which influences _friendship— — and Louis Moholo’s Spirit Rejoice always on our horizon — The children of Ornette Coleman are coming to gather for a few nights in Cape Town to dig deep, break tunes together, melt hearts with our friends! Rather than staging a reproduction, we let the spirit of this album feed into our present. Across back-to-back vinyl DJ sets, we trace connections between the archival and the contemporary, animating the overlooked frequencies of South Africa’s sound story and placing them in conversation with today’s communal energies. Friendship Next of Kin becomes more than a record, it becomes a point of return—a reminder that sound carries memory, kinship, and the possibility of futures shared. To open the journey, we present a mix by [kimetsu.] titled “WHERE THE SPIRIT STUTTERS, I DANCE” @congaspylations Born, bred, buttered & currently residing in Ivory Park, The East of Johannesburg, Itumeleng Leso, known by his anime-inspired moniker, [kimetsu.] builds worlds and unearths stories through sound and texture. [kimetsu.], is a serial music lover — deeply entrenched in experimental, exploratory music production & listening. By mesmerizing audiences with full-length sets of his own atmospheric production, DJing has become his main means of live exhibition, allowing him to curate transcendental, often emotionally disarming experiences. Today [kimetsu.]'s singular style, while nomadic, can be recognized with its synth-heavy, genre-agnostic, afro-tribal perspective which has picked up the name "drywall." artwork by @cu_xtremes
