Playful yet deep and. insistent rhythm using triplets or the energy of number 3.
Number 3 is pretty insistent here, creating interesting tension that feels like the rhythm pushes and inspires us to go further, to keep going, to keep moving regardless of anything. This whole rhythm brings steady confidence into my being.
I do work as usual with silence here to bring the winds of change. Interestingly, when the pauses or silence comes, it can really shift the energy. This is always a great analogy for me as to how silence in all possible ways is a powerful resource that we can activate in order to change the course of things.
I am obviously very inspired. by Andean music and sounds, the mountain vibe from Los Andes in Peru. Although I haven't been there in person, through the frequencies of sound I definitely can feel the vibe of that powerful location in our planet.

I love playing with the different roles that can be embodied in an grouping like this one.
Most of these drumming videos I record following a metronome in order for the rhythms to all match and line up. While I do that I can get very playful and creative with the way I subdivide and partition my beats and sounds.
Some of you may already know that I am truly passionate about minimalism/maximalism and being intentional about that in my drumming and artistic practice. In this sequence, there is a pretty fun play with minimalism by removing sounds that you would typically expect to have in a repeating basis.

This combination is an experimental symphony of pure rhythmic joy! I found a few loose tree branches and started playing with them outside in the woods. The resonance and reverberation was truly magical. Hitting each piece had an amazing sound as the trees around where sort of absorbing their sound and bouncing it back into my ears as pure bliss and deliciousness!
Also, hitting the pieces of wood while they sit on the ground, created as well a grounding sound that is not captured by this microphone. Just sharing with you about it as I was truly blown away by the sound that the ground/dirt/earth was making as it absorbed the vibrations of the sound.
This experiment here adds two djembes. Both I try to use them as simple sonic tools to provide an orchestral tympani style of sound in the background.
This is deep joy! I am probably going to do more of these videos, percussing as well with found natural objects. It is truly magical to explore and experiment with these sounds.

This set of grooves is inspired by electronic music with a consistent vibe and flow. Call it techno or house. I have been performing and working as well as a DJ for the past 20+ years and there's something truly special about assembling sounds around the steady thumping rhythm.
When I was taking world music courses in university, we got to learn about "where it all comes from".. I had a great teacher, Martin Arnold, who referred to African tribal drumming as the source of where much of our music of these days comes from. When we hear or learn from deeper tribal music, there is always a steady simple thump. As long as this steady step is consolidated, then anything is possible around it pace and intensity.
It is so fascinating to use rhythm on its own to craft musical and groovy sounds. I am grateful to be a drummer/percussionist and DJ, both crafts really speak to each other, creating much whimsical synergy for me, allowing my creative process to always find new pathways and exciting possibilities to explore.

Back into the Santanaesque vibe, it is definitely pretty uplifting.
Here I work with an interesting short pause as part of the rhythm, using silence as another form of sound and groove.
Silence is so useful in so many ways... in this drum pattern, we can feel and hear that short break, short silence moment, active silence, which brings a very potent pause.

I love working with these steady rhythms, creating a base layer through one of the drums and shaker to hold the other drum as it expresses itself and brings feeling into the mix. Again, this brings the powerful discussion of taking roles in order to enable masculine and feminine energies to coexist and thrive together.
This rhythm somehow brings me into a bossa nova vibe. As a drummer, having played many stiles with percussion and full drum kit, I feel it's quite useful to have a sense of different regional drumming patterns. These folkloric cultural patterns do provide me with a vast language of possibilities when adapted to different musical circumstances.
In my drum kit life, I do use a lot of bossa nova to bring a bit of flavour to rock or blues themed pieces. It helps in keeping things fresh.

This is an Afro beat inspired rhythm. The sounds remind me of the sound of waves in a body of sweet water.
I created this sequence after spending some time listening to the sound of the water at Georgian bay in Collingwood.
The idea for the djembe was to be more like an accessory that brings excitement and exaltations at the end of each phrase. Allowing for a little jump or skip-step to happen at the end of the phrase if you were dancing to it, while also allowing it to not disrupt the flow of the watery vibe created on the wooden drums.
