A lovely day at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens -- so much in bloom! I took these images after the delightful Mother's Day brunch. The butterflies were all out in the indoor gardens as well, and we made sure to say happy 50th bday to their tortoise! The outdoor walks were all open and the Hershey's children's garden was a hit.

Air Plant (Tillandsia) watering day! soak once a week for at least 10 minutes ( but not more than 30!). distilled or rain water is best, but a tap water soak ( let the water air out for a bit first) can also do. I also lightly mist with a mild air plant fertilizer every other watering.
loving that big guy and my little pink ones.

first day back to the community garden for the season! everything seems in order, even this forgotten bed with some purple dead nettle. It is a lovely first flower for polinators and I picked a bit as well to toss into scrambled eggs and make tea. Some seeds sown in fall are sprouting, too, such as red swiss chard, curly kale, some garlic, and chives. Can't wait to get more going and get into the full swing of the season, but for now, it is wonderful seeing the fresh blush of first greenery.

Sometimes the garden starts as kitchen scraps. Here a big piece of Japanese Purple sweet potato is making some slips. This is easy to do if you can get your hands on a nice organic sweet potato from the grocery store. You can either put the whole potato half in a cup of water in a warm, bright place, or at least most of one as long as the cut part is fully dried/scabbed over. In just a few weeks you will have tons of green shoots, each of which I will pop off and put in their own cup off water off of the yam ( because techincally these are yams even though we call them sweet potatoes) to develop strong roots before potting up and planting outside. I like to pot them for a bit in dirt before planting out, as I find it easier to then harden off that way. You can also see our green onions regrowing in some water as well as carrot tops. The green onions we nibble on straight from the kitchen as a garnish, but as the weather gets warmer I will plant out to let fully develop ( and sometimes let go to flower and seed!). The carrot tops will not grow new carrots directly, but I will let grow nice and robust with roots, plant out, and grow for the tops for carrot pesto, as well as for carrot flowers and seeds. With groceries so expensive, it is nice to try to get all we can out of what we get, and growing your scraps is a good way to do that!
what scraps are you growing?

After thinking about what I use to plan and track my garden, I decided to put it all together to make this fun, colorable garden journal and planner. So I had plenty of room to draw, sketch, and make lists, I designed it to be a larger size at 8.5x11 inches. At over 100 pages, a gardener can easily track 2 plus years gardening while adding their own colors and personal touches throughout to the various charts and coloring pages. I will be using one myself and hope you can all plan and track your dream gardens, too!
This is just a little video of me flipping through my freshly published and printed copy!

A small step toward spring -- just because there is snow outside does not mean you can't do things for your garden. One of the small things I do all winter is wash, dry, and crush my eggshells to use in the garden. I like to keep them a rough crush to sprinkle around my baby plants in spring to keep hungry slugs at bay. While not perfect, the sharp egg shells are uncomfortable to the slug's bellies, so they try not to cross them.
what small things do you do in the winter to plan for warmer weather?

My little "shop" @bluecafelkwd has been restocked with newly packaged seeds, dried herbed-salts, air plant fertilizers, and crystal airplant holders with live air plants! Grab a tasty beverage and snack ( I had an orange-cranberry scone and the ovaltine latte --yum!) And get some little gifts for your loved ones, friends, or even yourself. There are some great items here from little local artists you can support while getting getting beautiful and thoughtful gifts.

Note: I am a small seasonal plant nursery in the State of Ohio. I grow the seeds I dry and package up, I grow the herbs I slow dry and crush with sea salt myself, I make the airplant holders as well as the liquid air plant fertilizer mist. Check back in Spring, too, for when my nursery opens with unique heirloom tomato, eggplant, pepper, and herb plants.
The last of my Wooly Kate tomatoes for the season, and certainly one I will grow and offer for sale in the spring again! The blue shoulders and lovely yellow bottom are delightful and if you look closely in the 2nd picture you can see the faintest bit of peach fuzz on the tomato. The plant's vines are by far the prettiest tomato vines I have ever grown, as well. You can see their blue tint and wooly appearance. Not as sticky like most tomato plants either, but a little softer and fuzzier. The tomatoes themselves are medium firm, juicy, and mild with a slightly sweet acidic bite. Such a keeper :-)
