sometimes at my day job i get to do fun stuff, like drawing an illustration for the lunar new year.
then, seven or eight versions later it is no longer fun, and the final result is often so far removed from what i originally planned that it no longer feels mine.
but here's the initial version of the lunar new year illustration that i came up with (slightly adjusted to remove company-specific elements).
i based the shape of the horse on a figurine of a ferghana horse from the Tang dynasty. i also had a lot of fun with the flames.

@alena.ue and I were so happy to spend the day with @julijacagalj and @floremipsum_ learning from both artists how to sculpt figurines with clay, then the process of drying them by… yes, cooking them!

day 05 poppy / feather
Poppy is a brave guardian of the Meadow Realm. she uses her feather to glide around and see if nobody bothers the bees at work, if the mole tunnels are well kept, and if the local murder of crows isn't up to no good again. it's a very important job and Poppy is very diligent. rumour has it she might get promoted to Captain this winter evaluation season.

i had fun inventing ways to convey the birds' voices graphically without resorting to onomatopoeia 🎵 do you think the shape of the bubbles does them justice? would you do anything differently?
