A diatom is a microscopic, single-celled algae found in oceans, rivers and lakes. Encased in delicate silica shells, diatoms are among the most important life forms on Earth, producing around 50% of the oxygen we breathe and forming the base of many marine food webs. Dr Penelope Ajani works at the intersection of science and art. She holds a BSc and PhD in Marine Biology and has worked across academia, government and private consultancy as Director of Blooming Algae. Like engineers, architects and artists throughout history, Penny is captivated by the intricate beauty of the microscopic world. Her practice focuses on marine plankton, particularly microalgae, the foundational organisms of our oceans. These organisms support entire marine ecosystems and, like all living systems, are increasingly threatened by climate change. What does it mean to really know a place? There is a particular comfort in spending time where you are familiar, a place that hums with known sounds and patterns. How often do you take note of the spaces you move through each day? The artists in this activation bring works that draw from local environments, including elements that are often invisible to the naked eye. Together, they invite us to consider the deeper contexts of the everyday, whether it is the air we breathe, the water that surrounds and shapes Sydney, the sap and fibres of trees, or the topographies of the shore.
Think with care. Think with place. Deep Place. Captured by @jessica_maurer_photography

Deep Place returns for its final activation at Randwick Town Hall this weekend, open Saturday and Sunday from 10AM - 5PM. On Saturday from 2 - 3PM, Allan Giddy, Penelope Ajani, Aurelia King and Maya Martin-Westheimer will be in the space, sharing reflections on practice, process and the local environments that shape their work. Across the weekend, you’re welcome to add a small note or thought about Sydney to the installation, offering your own way of sensing place. Proudly supported by @randwickcouncil

Come say hello and be part of the Randwick Town Hall Takeover activation from 10am to 5pm. Visitors are invited to contribute to an ongoing installation by sharing what feels special to you about local Sydney ecologies, birds, trees, beaches, insects, anything you hold close. The first 100 visitors can take home a flannel flower, a gesture of care generously supported by the Randwick Community Nursery. On Saturday from 2 to 3pm, Allan Giddy and Penelope Ajani will speak informally about their work and their connections to local environments. @_aureliaking_
