I'm so excited to share that my first ever dress is finally finished!!
The overarching theme of this project was an exploration of Dissociation.
The American Psychiatric Association defines Derealization, a category of dissociative dissorders, as "experiences of unreality or detachment from one's surroundings. People may feel as if things and people in the world around them aren't real...".
I wanted to create a garment that illustrates that sort of liminal space between an objective reality and a dissociative imagination. Simultaneously abstracting the body whilst emphasizing every curve. The corset allows for the wearer to gain agency. The garment fits them, not the other way around.
This was the first garment I ever made completely from scratch. It was a long and difficult process, but upon its completion, I felt so fulfilled. I'm very excited to continue making and exploring my own design aesthetic 💕
