Nominalization can be a bit controversial to some writers and editors, but Flatpage editorial manager Ben Clifford is here to explain the benefits of this technique.
Nominalization can be a powerful tool to direct the focus and tone of a sentence, when used strategically. When used unintentionally or incorrectly, this method of turning other parts of speech into nouns can create text that is dense or overly wordy.

In early 2025, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology began preparing a photography book on American photographer Roger Marshutz (1929–2007). The book would feature a substantial selection of Marshutz’s photographs alongside seven thematic essays, an introduction, a bibliography, and detailed image captions.
Given the scale of written content and the complexity of image-text relationships, the project required experienced photography book editing and careful attention to editorial consistency. That’s why editor @tbradway brought Flatpage in for copyediting and proofreading.
In all of our work with Todd–and all partners–we prioritize seamless collaboration and transparent communication. These trusting relationships create the best output, no matter the complexity or scale of the project.

Co-editor @leslie7ann penned the first chapter, Developmental Editing, to share how editors can help guide academic authors’ writing process for best results.
To create our first title, we worked with 8 contributing experts to demystify the world of scholarly editing and take readers behind the scenes of Flatpage’s and others’ real-world editorial practice. Learn more about our books at the link in bio.
