Introducing the Josephine Butler stage @ Cobalt Studios on Saturday 6th June showcasing all things songwriter, experimental and tradition! Josephine Butler (1828 - 1906) was born in Northumberland and an important social reformer and advocate for women’s rights in education, public health and suffrage. She campaigned across the country against the Contagious Diseases Acts introduced in the 1860s which increased the demonisation, arrest and forced examination of sex workers and suspected women alike. In 1883, these acts were finally suspended and repealed three years later. We welcome you to celebrate all things folk and radical tradition! Stage times coming soon. Folk stage only tickets are available now for a limited time at .

Introducing our official after party on Saturday at @theoldcoalyard curated by the immense @dj.awkward.black.girl . Running from 9pm - 1am this event is free to all ticket holders. She will be joined by two local legends EMpTY and Jacklyn. DJ Awkward Black Girl: Born in the south but at home in the North, DJ Awkward Black Girl loves to play music and get people dancing with a mix of Rock, RnB, Soul, Funk, Garage, Hip Hop, Disco, Dance, and much more. Expect a nostalgic party vibe with a contemporary twist. She also founded Bend&Shake: a queer party in Newcastle-upon-Tyne run by women & non-binary people of colour to provide a safer space for women, trans people, QTIPOC & asylum seekers EMpTy: EMpTy is a queer and non-binary DJ hailing from the North East of England. Equal parts silly, slutty & bass-y, they play beats & bangers that make the queers want to dance & bounce, and the straights straight-up question their sexuality. Weaving subtle storylines into their multi-genre sets, they celebrate queer and trans artists, culture, hedonism and empowerment. Expect the bass and the breaks – sex-on-the-dancefloor techno and hard dance pop bootlegs, fast-paced (160 genders per minute) donk remixes, and a fistful of trance and hyperpop for your nerves! Jacklyn: Jacklyn is a Newcastle-based techno DJ and producer known for a purist, raw, and atmospheric sound that blends moody European techno with synth-loaded Detroit tracks. Recognized in DJ Mag's Emerging Artist Spotlight (Feb 2025), she has gained traction for her self-released productions, gaining support from artists like Francois X. Photo credits by Sandra Muzykant. Catch @the_none_band at @thegrovenewcastle June 7th As part of @marrapalooza THE NONE formed at the start of 2023 and bonded over hours in the rehearsal room – making noise, discussing shared obsessions, and, most importantly, playing together.  The anonymity of their name reflects a creative approach that favours egoless experimentation and open collaboration. This ethos, the combined decades of music making, and the unique musical identities of all four members can be clearly heard in the art they create. Following their debut shows in February 2024, THE NONE have quickly built a reputation as a formidable live band – racking up shows with the likes of Mannequin Pussy, Les Savy Fav, Metz and The Jesus Lizard, as well as sold out headline dates and a string of festival appearances.  The band released their debut EP, MATTER, in August 2024, exclusively on Bandcamp. They’re now gearing up to release the follow-up, CARE, before embarking on more tour dates and festival appearances across 2025. ‘MATTER is a brooding, furious blast of an EP … throughout the barrage of threshed instruments, bellowed vocals, and pounded drums, THE NONE somehow manage to summon infectious melodies from the center of this flaming blizzard.’–Bandcamp Album of The Day ‘They ricochet across a cavalcade of genres. Stuttering early noughties inspired Brit rock, bullish hardcore grit and even Life Without Buildings-style post punk’– The Quietus ‘… a brilliant industrial racket’– Rolling Stone ‘THE NONE write from the gut. They know who they are, what they like, and how they like to play it’– DIY ‘Britain’s most intriguing new band’– Far Out Magazine ‘[THE NONE] blew everybody’s minds away from the moment they entered the stage. By far, one of the most interesting acts to grace Supersonic this year’– Sleeping Shaman “…one of the more demanding new punk records…it doesn’t settle to the idea that you can be a passive listener, it wants to drill deep down inside you”– Steve Lamacq, BBC 6 Music “The band I’m probably most excited about … There’s one thing you should do in 2025: go and see THE NONE live”– Emily Pilbeam, 6 Music Mixtape’s Ones To Watch

Catch @jenniferballadss in Newcastle June 6th At the Josephine Butler stage at this year's @marrapalooza @cobaltstudios.ouseburn Others at the Josephine Butler stage include: @elanor.moss @mlkwd_ @jimghedimusic @jasmine.padgett @bookofvoices @gweniferraymond About Jennifer Reid: Sixteen years in, Jennifer moves between worlds with ease. She was once described as having “irreverent puckish vim” in a mag. She plays Barb in Shane Meadows’ The Gallows Pole, has opened for Pulp and John Cooper Clarke and performed for Chanel’s Metiers d’Art. She’s toured with Eliza Carthy for 18 months, and in 2025-6, took her songs to Aotearoa to critical acclaim. Rooted in archives and oral histories, her work braids nineteenth-century music with the present: teaching, performing, researching, sharing, advocating and supporting spaces for memory and making in the tradition.

Dance along with Transylvanian Ceilidh Sunday of @marrapalooza At the Ida and Louise Cook stage @cobaltstudios.ouseburn The Transylvanian Ceilidh is a vibrant music and dance experience rooted in the authentic traditions of Roma communities in Transylvania. Performed by Roma musicians, the music comes directly from village repertoires—passed down through generations and rarely heard outside of these communities. Following the format of the Scottish ceilidh—a social dance tradition that closely mirrors the way music and dance are shared in Transylvanian villages—their performance brings people together on the dance floor in a lively, communal setting. An expert dance caller guides participants through the steps, making it accessible to everyone. Blending these parallel traditions, the Transylvanian Ceilidh offers a rare opportunity to experience living Roma culture in an inclusive, high-energy celebration.

We're delighted to welcome @gweniferraymond on Saturday 6th June at @cobaltstudios.ouseburn At the Josephine Butler stage at this year's @marrapalooza a stage dedicated to folk and song traditions. more details: On Gwenifer Raymond: ‘an immersive debut’ 8/10 The Observer ‘...stunningly confident, in full possession of its art’ Uncut  ‘...raw, virtuosic...’ Mojo ‘Raymond’s fearsome precision often feels both portentous and perfect.’ ****  The Guardian '...no doubt that she is among the most vital, dynamic voices within the still-teeming solo guitar orbit.' **** Mojo 'This the sound of celebration of life, and of music escaping confinement and coming to be freed.' 8/10 Uncut Fascinating, daring and complex’ folk radio Gwenifer Raymond began playing guitar at the age of eight shortly after having been first exposed to punk and grunge. After years of playing around the Welsh valleys in various punk outfits she began listening more to pre-war blues musicians as well as Appalachian folk players, eventually leading into the guitar players of the American Primitive genre. In 2018 she signed to the American label ‘Tompkins Square’ and released her first album ‘You Never Were Much of a Dancer’ to widespread acclaim. In 2020 her second album ‘Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain’ shifted somewhat from straight Americana and started to take more of a spiritual influence from the landscape of her homeland of Wales. Recalling from her childhood memories of spooky trees, black against the grey sky and breath misting in cold air there is present a style of guitar playing that could be referred to as ‘Welsh Primitive’.

We're delighted to tell yas that @lilnathy will open for @loscampesinos at @northumbriastudentsunion ! We're down to the last set of tickets for the opening night of @marrapalooza Get yours here: On Nathy SG: “Nathy SG is a DIY punk-pop project from North East songwriter Nathan Stephens-Griffin (Martha / Onsind). His debut was a 2 track 7” Corporate Lawyer and Broken Ankle Song, released via his own label Cowie Jaw Recordings, which showcased his songwriting at its catchy and sardonic best. Nathy reveals more about the songs: “The lead single Corporate Lawyer tells the tale of a desperate man trapped in a bizarre and increasingly sinister contractual agreement that he regrets signing. The b-side Broken Ankle Song is about a night of pashing in Hamburg, told from the perspective of a bed-bound failed skateboarder. He has enlisted a team of DIY legends for his live set up, including Laura Kovic (Fortitude Valley/Tigercats), Jason Cavalier (Supermilk/Onsind/Honey Joy), Charlie Jamison (Supermilk) and Michael Craig (Cortney Dixon). Catch the Nathy band on selected dates of Los Campesinos’ UK tour this June.”
