Meet Empathy Squad Member from Cohort 18, Anke 👋
“I am 19 years old and currently taking a gap year before returning to school in the fall. I plan on getting a degree in journalism which is why I got involved with the Empathy Squad as it is the perfect opportunity to explore something I am interested in while being out of school. My piece revolves around immigrants’ experiences with moving to Canada and adapting to a new culture and way of life. This topic came about on New Year’s while having a late night talk with two of my close friends about my experience with immigrating from South Africa and what I have taught them as Canadians. I hope that the people who hear this piece and have gone through similar struggles with their move, can find comfort in knowing they are not alone, and that anyone who hasn’t, has a better understanding of the courage it takes to leave your life, friends, and family behind.”
Tomorrow, Anke will be hosting a listening party for her podcast, “Uprooted: Immigrant Identity and Belonging in Canada”

Meet Empathy Squad Member from Cohort 17, Cameron 👋
“Hi! My name is Cameron O'Bear, I'm 28 years old and in my fourth year as an English Major at the University of Calgary. I'm an older brother, and a proud member of two different found families. I have a particular fascination with all things horror, and a deep love of media in general. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, I have lived experience with disability and have grown very passionate about the ways that peoples with disabilities are treated in light of their irreducibly diverse and unique circumstances. In my time, I've been a member of the YYC's accessibility council, working towards effective changes for people with disabilities and personal difficulties of many different kinds, I have volunteered twice with the Calgary public library, first as a leader of a youth creative writing workshop, and later as leader for a writer's circle program aimed at mature writers who had been hoping to break into writing for themselves.
Thank you so, so much for taking the time to engage with me and the Empathy Squad, I hope that your time here is as enjoyable for you as it was for me!”

Meet Empathy Squad Member from Cohort 18, Esther 👋
“Hello, my name is Esther Makide and I’m a first year student at Western University currently studying political science and economics. Growing up French has been like second nature to me as it was a part of my everyday lived experience and way of communication. For me the language was even deeper than a cultural exchange; it was deep seeded historical and colonial imprint in my very being. I never truly understood the importance that the French language held in my life until I moved away from home for university. The isolation of an unfamiliar place was crippling but what was more sad was the fact that I could no longer communicate in my native tongue on a day-to-day basis. Finding this emptiness in me made me seek out ways to communicate and share about my experiences with the language with as many people as possible.”
Next Friday, March 15th at 6pm ET, Esther will be hosting a listening party for her podcast, “The place of the French language in modern Canada”

Meet Empathy Squad Member from Cohort 18, Haylyn 👋
“Hey there! I'm Haylyn Agacer, a 23 year old university student living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba, majoring in Film and Classics. From as long as I can remember, I have always loved stories. Whether it is minor gossip to literature to movies, any form of medium, I enjoyed learning about others life experiences and how their journey brought them to the present-day. For the most part, I am an introvert who mainly enjoys the comfort of my home binge watching anime and dramas or binge reading novels, manga, and webtoons. When I do go outside, it is mainly to go to university for classes, work or volunteer commitments.
As an aspiring storyteller, I am looking forward to sharing the stories that I have heard when doing this project with everyone.”
This Friday, Haylyn is hosting a listening party for her podcast, “Winnipeg Made: Student Businesses”
