I'm working on the script for "The Super Strat: A Short History". EVH builds these "Striped Frankie" series guitars in Ensenada. They look the business to be sure. I've never owned a guitar with a Floyd (WHAT a surprise right?!) so to be honest, I'm afraid to plug the thing in and see how in tune it is.
Historical geekery. Frankie never had a Floyd on it when it was black and white. The guitar had been painted red before the Floyd was added and the neck swapped out accordingly. BUT, they did put a single knob labeled "TONE" like the original. It's in the details.
Mike, my editor ,teased me that he'd expect to see me playing "Eruption" in the video intro. To which I quickly responded that it would "be a copyright strike ...otherwise..."
As if...
But I will be changing out the Barber/fww BUSS for the higher gain version in that little pedalboard in the pic...just in case.

I changed out the strings on this traditional Bigsby (ugh!) equipped 2002 Gretsch MIJ 6120 Jr the other day. Actually went down to 9's at the suggestion of guru David Barber as the frets are on the low side. "low frets...go lighter" and it worked perfectly on this guitar.
I'll admit, that I mostly use this for jazzier things and the orange color sort of rubs me the wrong way for that image...but with the blue...color theory engaged!
BTW, this is me smiling. My wife is always joking that only I know when I'm smiling...unless I'm laughing...which I do often...usually on a livestream.
I'm off celebrating my birthday, my wife's birthday and my mom's (90th!) birthday. I've got two videos almost ready to go to tied you over.

If you missed my earlier post, this is a 2002 Built in Japan D'Angelico New Yorker. Fully 17" archtop. Really loud unplugged and though not yet set up for me, I was impressed by how easily it plays.

I plan on making a Short History of D'Angelico this year and a long time good friend of five watt world sent this amazing 2002 Japan built New Yorker that he's owned for years because he thought it should be "with someone that actually plays jazz sometimes." Incredibly generous, I'm speechless. (ok, nearly) :)
I'm really surprised at how loud the guitar is acoustically, and how big a full size 17" archtop is yet how comfortably it plays. It's really something else. Thanks Chris!

It's Friday! TPS and an hour's worth of exercises and guitar tone tweaking. The Magnatone Kingstons sounded so good I had to get my pair of Princetons out (Mojotone handwired and a Fender ToneMaster) to check my memory. This rig does sound wonderful, but the Maggies sound, I don't know, "bigger"...because they are just a bit.
The guitar is a 2009 Mira X with Ron Ellis "Ellisonic" pickups, single coil wonders in this very familiar package.
Note the Rok Lok strap locks that have moved me back to playing on a strap, even sitting down.
The Barber Custom pedal with red knobs is a prototype for the Barb EQ model David worked up for me. I use it with the Princetons on the high power tweed setting to add in some tweedy midrange, or on the 5e3 to scoop it for rhythm playing. David is building new batches of Barb EQ's including a new more "vintagy" color (I refuse to say "colorway".)
I need to work on the Stomp presets for this tiny board. I'd like to put a harmonic trem on a switch...not in anyway influenced by Joey Landreth being on TPS today...not much anyway.
