Last Saturday, Five Borough Veterans partnered with Brooklyn FC for Military Appreciation Night at Maimonides Park. Our team was on the ground connecting with veterans and their families, and we were honored to be part of an evening that brought the military-connected community together in a meaningful way. Thank you to Brooklyn FC for the partnership and for creating space for this community. We're proud to have been there. #FiveBoroughVeterans #BrooklynFC #MilitaryAppreciationNight #Brooklyn #VeteranCommunity #ConeyIsland

Over the past week, we’ve received your emails and concerns about the Mayor’s announcement last week. We hear you. We wrote this piece in partnership with our President, Michael Matos, to share the truth and shed a light on why honoring the Post-9/11 generation of veterans requires more intentionality. Regardless, we’re still moving forward with our Memorial Ruck March on May 24th in Brooklyn. Link in our bio to sign up. In the meantime, read our full story about it here (also in our bio) #nyc #nycveterans

Six months ago, Five Borough Veterans didn’t exist. Today, we have a law. Intro 291-A just passed the New York City Council, and for the first time, the city is required to track and report suicide deaths by veteran status, every single year, broken down by borough, age, race, and more. The most recent data anyone had on veteran suicide in NYC was from 2017. That was the best we could do. Not anymore. This happened because Council Members Farrah Louis and Linda Lee fought for it, and because James Edward Becton III and Gerard Placide walked into City Hall and testified. They put a human reality behind the numbers we were asking the city to count. We’re proud. We’re grateful, and we’re just getting started. 🔗 Full story — link in bio. #VeteranSuicidePrevention #NYC #FiveBoroughVeterans #Intro291A #VeteransMentalHealth NYCVeterans NeverForget

Yesterday, Five Borough Veterans President Michael Matos joined the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services and the United War Veterans Council, Inc. to recognize and pay tribute to Vietnam Veterans Day. One of the greatest aspects of our military-connected community here in NYC is how each generation of service is able to come together and honor the memory of those who came before. 📸: Joe Sinnott #NYCVeterans #NYCFamilies #NYCMilitary

When the public and private sectors work together with intention, the whole community wins! Our Five Borough Veterans leaders had a productive session with NYC DVS Commissioner Yesenia Mata. They spent time discussing how we can better serve our military-connected neighbors by playing to our strengths. We are proud to announce the establishment of this ongoing partnership. While DVS focuses on the support and services our community needs today, we will be focusing on the legislation and policy needed for tomorrow. #Veterans #newyorkcity #fiveboroughveterans #CommunitySupport #advocacy

As more veterans become independents, New York’s closed primary system leaves them without a voice. This week, we joined fellow veterans and allies in Albany to call for open primaries. Our message was simple: let everyone vote. For those who’ve sacrificed to defend democracy, being shut out of the process is unacceptable. Change won’t come overnight, but our voices are growing louder and Albany will keep hearing from us. Tap the link in our bio to read more about our fight.

As we continue to honor Black History Month, we are reminded of the ongoing work that needs to be done to preserve our way of life in the country, and right here in New York City. To end a Memorial Ruck March, U.S Army Veteran Errol Davis discusses how we can continue to move forward as one unified community. He shares these words of wisdom, as our group pays a visit to the Harlem Hellfighters Memorial, the first all-black unit to fight on the front lines of World War I. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #nycveterans #nycmilitary #nycfamilies 🎥: @adrianlchildress

The American experiment will only survive if those who believe in it, safeguard and care for its values. Last night, Five Borough Veterans stood alongside @nationalnurses , @afgelocal3911 , @1199seiu , @handsoffnyc , @thenyic and other community organizations to do just that. While we mourn and honor the legacy of Alex Pretti, we remain committed to upholding the oath we took to protect the American people and their way of life. Thank you to all who joined us last night in the freezing cold to make your voices heard. #nycveterans #nycnurses #nycunions #nycleaders 📸: @garydeanclarke and @derekfrenchphoto

As the @nyccouncil prepares to vote on the establishment of an annual report to study the impacts of suicide, our advocates made it clear that this bill must not pass without veterans being included specifically in the study. With veterans facing a 1.5 times higher risk of experiencing suicide and only 29% of our population identified in NYC, this amendment ensures we can accurately account for and focus on those who need support the most. Thank you to advocates Gerard and Becton for speaking up for us. #nycveterans

Yesterday at the City Council Hearing on Federal Government Overreach, our president Michael Matos delivered testimony on behalf of Five Borough Veterans. Alongside him, members from across all five boroughs showed up in solidarity. He reminded leaders that masked agents, misuse of the National Guard, and threats against elected officials erode trust, citizenship, and democracy itself. “No service member should be asked to stand against the very people they are charged with defending.” Veterans across all five boroughs remain committed to protecting our communities and upholding the Constitution. The question now is whether those in office will do the same?
