King David Kalākaua’s 1883 coronation at ʻIolani Palace was a deliberate, global strategy to assert Hawaiʻi’s sovereignty and modernity. Beyond the spectacle of crowns and uniforms, the true power lay in the substance: funding education, strengthening the military, formalizing genealogy, and reviving hula and mele. This balance of design (symbols) and institutional action was a move to protect Hawaiian identity and tried to define a nation on its own terms. The coronation ring, bearing the crown and coat of arms, symbolizes this heavy action at the time while trying to keep the in-flu-en-zah’s away!
