Every day we try to make choices that matter for the waters, the land, and the communities behind our menu. This Earth Day, we want to celebrate the people behind every plate.
The watermen, farmers, and suppliers who show up for the earth long before. We work around them, taking what the season gives and trusting them to lead the way.
To highlight a few:
Double T Oyster Ranch
@tt_oyster have been working with oysters since 1917. Their oysters filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, playing a vital role in the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
Baywater Seafood
@baywaterseafood has been farming bay scallops since 2020. Their fast growing, low-impact farming is helping wild populations recover, and zero goes to waste. They’re one of the few businesses who sell them in the shell so have a very low mortality rate (they die as soon as shucked). Scalllop shells lost in production are ground up and returned to the water as culch to supports their oyster farming.
Smoke in Chimneys
@smokeinchimneys raise trout with zero electricity, no chemicals, and virtually no waste. Even the fish guts feed the chickens.
Moon Valley Farm
@moonvalleyfarm has built a community food hub supporting dozens of local farmers, sharing resources and keeping our food system resilient.
Glen Manor Vineyards
@glenmanorvineyards sits on the western flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has been owned and farmed by the same family for over 100 years, recognized by Virginia as a Century Farm.
Autumn Olive Farms is an award-winning family farm in the Shenandoah Valley where Clay and Linda Trainum raise Berkabaw pigs the way nature intended - foraging freely, with goats and hogs helping manage the land and fertilize the soil naturally.
Dreaming Out Loud Our charity
@doldc partner as well as a supplier fights food inequity and strives to improve food access and literacy in impoverished areas of the city.
