FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre is a cornerstone of downtown St. Catharines’ revitalization, transforming a full city block into a vibrant regional destination for arts and culture.
Located adjacent to Brock University’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, the Centre stands as a crossroads for artistic production, arts education and civic engagement. It serves as a hub for classes and rehearsals, and a professional venue for a diverse program of performances.
The design engages the streetscape through the scale and materiality of its context, expressed in light-toned brick and expansive glazing. Along the rear elevation, bold cantilevered volumes extend the building’s presence into the broader landscape. Inside, a fully accessible environment integrates adaptable acoustics and carefully calibrated sightlines to enhance the audience experience. In the lobby, transparency connects indoor and outdoor spaces, animating the public realm and inviting people in.
Ten years after its completion, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre remains a vital piece of civic infrastructure, thoughtfully connecting art, entertainment, and community.

We went to see Finding Home: A Salmon Journey Upstream, a hilarious and heartfelt play about friendship, growing up, and finding your own path. From the moment we hopped on the school bus to the final curtain, it was such a special adventure.
With puppetry, live music, and so much charm, the story of Beagle and Sojo reminded us how strong friendship can be, even when life takes you in different directions.
