Planning a camping trip? Jerry the Moose and Ember the FireSmart Fox are here with a few simple tips to help you keep your campfire safe and protect the places we all love. Before lighting a campfire, always check BCwildfire.ca or use the BC Wildfire app, and check with local or Indigenous governments to see if there is a campfire ban or prohibition in the area you are visiting. If there isn’t an active campfire ban, you can usually have a safe campfire by doing the following: - Always avoid having a campfire when it’s windy - Use a designated fire ring - Do not collect firewood in a park - Use locally sourced firewood and avoid transporting it over long distances to help prevent the spread of invasive species - Keep your fire smaller than 0.5 m high and 0.5 m wide - Be equipped with at least 8 L of water or a hand tool - Never leave your campfire unattended for any amount of time - Ensure that your fire is completely extinguished before going to bed or leaving the area; the coals should be cool to the touch - At home, store any leftover firewood at least 10 metres away from your home or other structures - If a fire ban is in place, or if you want to be extra-cautious, use a CSA-rated propane campfire A few simple precautions go a long way in protecting the places we all enjoy. #BCParks #ExploreBC #KnowBeforeYouGo #BCWildfireService #firesmart

Cedar hedges look nice, but did you know they’re highly flammable? Due to their high natural resin and oil content, these hedges could put your home at risk during wildfire season. Consider swapping cedar and other flammable vegetation for fire-resistant plants such as poplars, hawthorn, or maple.

You see a storage spot for your patio furniture. We see wildfire fuel. Combustibles like propane, firewood, and even plastic patio furniture could put your home at risk during a wildfire. Storing combustibles at least 10 metres away from your home could help save your home. Learn more FireSmart preparedness tips at the Through FireSmart Eyes link in our bio.

A new chapter in community wildfire resilience is here. The Local FireSmart Collective Program (LFCP) is replacing the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program in BC. Why the change? Because wildfire resilience works best when programs reflect the unique needs of our communities. That’s why the LFCP is built specifically for British Columbians. Delivered in partnership with @bcaarewards , whose continued support through the BCAA FireSmart Initiative helps strengthen community wildfire resilience across the province.

Wildfire season is here, and the risks aren’t always obvious. Messy gutters look untidy, but more importantly, those dry leaves and debris are the perfect kindling for flying embers. See your property through FireSmart eyes at the link in our bio.

Columbine (Aquilegia) is our May Plant of the Month 🌸 Looking to add some colour to your yard? Columbine is a great option that also supports a more fire-resilient landscape. These airy, clump-forming plants bloom from late spring into mid-summer, with delicate, nodding flowers in a range of colours. They’re easy to grow, attract pollinators, and are generally ignored by deer. While individual plants are short-lived, Columbine will self-seed and spread, making it a great choice for filling in areas where higher-risk plants have been removed. A simple swap like this can help make your yard more resilient over time.
