Meet the Locals…Finn & Olivia 👋 Our proud homegrown athletes, with @finnmurphypara a part of the NZ kayaking team and a Paralympic prospect with a whole lot of heart. We loved chatting with these two inspirational human beings. Finn is heading over to Europe for an upcoming World Cup, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what’s ahead. Follow along his journey! Their dad, Patrick, very much a familiar face, usually found at Brew Bar with a coffee in hand and his dog, Lilly, close by. When he’s not at Your Local, his artwork is now on display at the Franklin Arts Centre, so be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.🧡

22nd March 2016- 10 years ago winning the club double at Rowing New Zealand National Championships with my brother @baldranga , to now training for the 2026 ICF Paracanoe world championships. It's crazy what 10 years, an amputated foot and a big bonk on the head can do to a man.

2025 Male Canoe Sprint Athlete of the Year Finalists ✨Finn Murphy (North Shore Canoe Club) Having only started paddling 3 years ago, 2025 was Finn's first international season. At his first ICF event (Paracanoe World Cup in Poznan) he just missed out on the KL3 200m A final but came back with a dominant win in the B final. Weeks later at his first World Championships, he qualified for the A final and finished 9th in the KL3 classification. ✨Quaid Thompson (Poverty Bay Kayak Club) Having been on the scene as NZ's top men's 1000m paddler for a while, Quaid achieved his best international sprint results in 2025. He made the B final in the Men's K1 1000m at both the World Championships and World Cup in Poznan. He achieved an impressive 4th place in the MK1 5000m at the Poznan World Cup as well as 9th at the 5000m at the World Champs. ✨Scott Martlew (Arawa Canoe Club) Three time Paralympian Scott Martlew continued to perform at the top level on the world stage in 2025. At the ICF Paracanoe World Championships, he finished 4th overall in the KL2 200m classification. Well done to these finalists on a remarkable 2025! 👏👏👏 The winner will be announced at the 2025 CRNZ Sport and Recognition Awards ceremony on 31 January.

Last Friday I was fortunate enough to win the University of Auckland para-athlete sportsperson of the year. It was entirely unexpected, and I absolutely botched the opportunity to speak afterward, so in place of a well polished speech, here is a slightly polished post. Sport has always been a big part of my life, but the dream to compete for New Zealand was one that I definitely thought was behind me prior to my accident. Having the opportunity to compete for Aotearoa while also being able to study is a massive privilege. @uoasportandrec high performance team has been a massive help with making accommodations to my studies so I can fit in my training and competition schedule. Two of the best things that happened to me as a result of losing the leg were taking up kayaking and enrolling at university. Chasing a dream on two fronts is something not many people get to do, so I'm incredibly grateful for everyone who helps facilitate this journey for me. He waka eke noa.

Easing back into training after 6 weeks in europe. I came back with an extra 5kg, probably on account of the pasta and cheese, so I'm glad to get back to Aotearoa and have some decent balanced meals. @swolefoodsnz has a range of high protein ready to eat meals that will make losing the spare kegs easy, so I won't sink my boat next season. It's super convenient to pack and go when I have big training days and tasty as too, so I dont feel like im missing out. You can find stockists near you on their website, or order online.

Debut world champs done and dusted. Super happy with how it went. 9th in the world in a stacked event. I learned heaps and I'm returning to Aotearoa with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration as well as some key focuses to work on. None of it would be possible without my coach @gavinelmiger . The amountof sacrifice he makes to support my journey can not be quantified. The only correct answer to David Goggins question "who's going to carry the boats?" is Gav, and he also carries a lot more. Can't wait to get home and get stuck in.
