In the late 1970’s the famed and legendary Surfin’ Turf skateboard park in Greenfield Wisconsin was born. It survived a few years and fell victim to skateboarding’s recession in the early 80s and shut its doors with most of the other parks in the U.S. except for Del Mar and Upland in California, and Kona in Florida. After its first closing the bowls were covered up and the building was leased to some slippery lawyers from Chicago who discovered a loophole in the law that would allow them to to turn a skateboard park into a strip club. Surfin’ Turf became exactly that, and the name was changed to “Bell E. Buttons.” (You can’t make this $hit up) After a few years this enterprise sunk, the plywood covers were removed from the fully intact bowls and Surfin’ Turf had a rebirth in the late 80s until the early 90s. At this time there were only 4 skateparks left open in America: Del Mar, Upland, Kona, and the hollowed ground of Surfin’ Turf skatepark in Greenfield Wisconsin. “The Turf, as it was aptly renamed became a skate mecca for riders from all over the world and pros from Tony Hawk, Chris Miller, Team Santa Cruz, legends of skateboarding, would make the pilgrimage to ride the sacred ground of this place. A music and cultural art scene formed around it. This nucleus, this unique cosmic center, of being in the right place at the right time is what I grew up in. Myself and a small handful of filmmakers and photographers where there to capture it and ride the walls. Thrasher, Transworld magazines would cover the park over the years, the Director Spike Jonze would film here, and Santa Cruz made a 16mm film about the Turf. My friends and would be fortunate enough to appear in magazines and these films. It was the greatest time of our lives, but all we cared about was the skating, nothing else mattered. Ultimately the parks closed, with the exception of Kona. The rise of street skating, and VERT skateboarding died again by the early 1990s. 3 generations of skateboarders have ridden here from the most legendary pros to people from all over the world. The grand re-opening of the park opens on June 7th, 2025.
