Director-General Paolo Villaluna and Kristine Kintana, head of the Film Academy of the Philippines film awards and events, met with Tom Swayne of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the organization behind the Oscars, during the Academy’s series of meetings with international film institutions, festivals, and industry partners in Cannes.
Their conversation focused on the Academy’s worker-forward mandate: supporting guilds, expanding training, strengthening worker protection, and helping Filipino films prepare better for major international awards circuits, including the Oscars.
The meeting also came as AMPAS continues to reach out to film communities around the world ahead of the 100th Oscars. Swayne described the Academy’s worker-forward mandate as unique. For the Film Academy, that mandate means connecting awards strategy with the workers, guilds, and creative teams behind Filipino films.
The Film Academy of the Philippines arrived in Cannes this week as part of the Philippine delegation to the 79th Festival de Cannes.
Led by Director General Paolo Villaluna, the Academy is meeting with international institutes, global partners for local training, campaign strategists for industry awards and foreign worker guilds during the festival.
These meetings support the Academy's work across its mandates: guild support, worker training, awards and honors, and worker protection. They are part of continuing efforts to expand training opportunities, international access, and practical support for Filipino film workers and the guilds that represent them.
More updates from Cannes will follow!

(2/2) The Film Academy of the Philippines has successfully concluded the 40-hour Basic Occupational Safety and Health - Safety Officer 2 (BOSH SO2) Training, conducted in partnership with the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), bringing together members of the Alliance of Filipino Stunt Professionals, Inc. (AFSPI) and other film workers from across the industry.
Over four intensive training days, participants deepened their understanding of occupational safety and health principles; hazard identification, risk assessment and control (HIRAC); accident prevention; and the legal and practical responsibilities of Safety Officers. The training also provided an opportunity to contextualize OSH concepts within the unique working conditions and risks of film production, particularly in high-risk areas such as stunt work.
This initiative is part of the Film Academy’s commitment to the upskilling and protection of Filipino film workers. By equipping participants with nationally recognized OSH competencies, the program helps strengthen a culture of care and shared responsibility among film and audiovisual workers.

The Filipino Screenwriters Guild visited the Film Academy of the Philippines offices in Quezon City yesterday. During the visit, the Academy formalized its partnership with FSG to support two planned activities for the third quarter of 2026: the guild’s General Assembly in August and a screenwriting workshop in September. The partnership falls under the Academy’s mandate to work with representative film guilds, strengthen professionalization, and expand training and support for film and audio-visual workers.

The Ricky Lee Scriptwriting Workshop has always been more than about craft. It's a community tradition, and the Film Academy is honored and proud to be the National Artist Ricky Lee's partner for this batch.
Congratulations, Batch 30!
As part of our Reel Vision program to further professionalize the industry, the Film Academy partnered with the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) to train and certify members of the Alliance of Filipino Stunt Professionals Inc (AFSPI), and yesterday was the first day of training!
This OSHC – Film Academy partnership is a continuing program of certifying our film and audio-visual workers. It aims to enhance their safety skills and compliment their livelihoods—by giving them the opportunity to work in their off seasons as safety officers on other people's productions!
Behind every high-risk scene is a person doing their job. This program is our commitment to making sure everyone goes home safe.
