Thirteen years ago I lived in this $340/month fishing shack beside the wintering eagles on the Iowa River, taught writing for a living, partied all the time with poets, broke hearts and was heartbroken on the regular, listened to Tusk and John Phillips ad nauseam to the point of other poets’ mockery. I probably would have told you I was miserable then, but there’s a lot of freedom and joy to be found in the past these days.
It’s my grandma Trudy’s 105th birthday today. She’s the lil blonde in the photo. She said she had a great pizza party with my aunt and cousins this afternoon. A few weeks ago she beat my 76-year-old dad at gin rummy. I lit my other grandmother’s Infant of Prague tonight in honor of my powerful matriarchy. 🎂❤️🔥🌲
Moments I cared deeply for in the recent past, including my first big-screen of Peeping Tom, SFO tailgate the night of the assassination attempt, camping at Dinosaur Tracks during a sky symphony, abandoned miner shack y mas ❤️
Pay attention to what grows around you, a curandera told me this winter.

“You looove Las Vegas,” my dude teased me when I came home from work tonight with a silly grin. Today was particularly lovely—questing for burnt cheese tacos & interviews with their makers, happened upon two Netflix productions filming downtown & thus cadged my way into a peek at the grand insides of a former parachute factory I’d been dying to see for years (temporarily reimagined as a dance hall), saw some cool rare books & chatted with the gal at my fave antique store, who said she’d look for more spider jewelry for me (she remembers 🥹) & otherwise tacoed about successfully, enjoying the company of the exceedingly kind people of San Miguel County, who have endured so much suffering since Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak, as reported by the @lasvegasoptic , marking two years ago next month. Lots of horsetail clouds on the way back.☁️🖤🌶️🌮🧀
A lil behind the scenes action atop a mountain, going back to November when @stefanwachs kindly drove us up to dig crystals with @twoguysonehole & then we got up close with the Blanchard Beast at the NM Mineral Symposium. Rockhounding is the future. Link in bio and @newmexicomag 🍂🔮🤘
