I’ve been searching for words all week to describe my Grandma and what she meant to me. All I can manage right now is this totally inadequate and incomplete summary. She’s the one person who really understood me and always believed in me no matter what. Her gift was seeing us for who we were and relating to us on a completely individual personal level. She created a dream world for us where we could escape all our troubles and feel totally loved. I’ve never felt more peace and happiness. I’d say it really was a dream but we all remember it exactly the same. She was an expert quilt maker, gardener, cook and storyteller. She was a student of art, history and world cultures. She loved reading, travel, nature, bird watching, butterflies rocks and bugs. She was an incredible collector and curator of objects. Above all though, she loved sharing these things with us. If you know me, maybe you can see the impact she’s had on my life. A door just closed forever and it hurts real bad. I love you, Grandma. Thank you for all the gifts. (For the record, I should disclose she also had a huge crush on Rod Stewart and Sting) Here’s a text version of the letter I included in the slides: 💌 This book belongs to Jordan Soon you will be 9 years old. Your birthday party will be tomorrow. This will be a list of things I like about you. You are always ready to try something new. You aren’t afraid. You are brave. When we would go for walks at the nature preserve, you were always ready to go out ahead. Do you remember the time we found the opossum skeleton and you thought it was dinosaur bones? It looked like dinosaur bones to me also. You have a love and appreciation for animals. Just a few weeks ago you got bit by a big turtle that I found crossing the street and brought home for you to see. You kept messing around with him until he finally bit you. He really was too big to have as a pet though. You are a good student. When I would visit your school, I would peek in on you and you would be working. I could just imagine how you would be sitting in that same position for many years to come.
