"Like you I
love love, life, the sweet smell
of things, the sky-blue
landscape of January days."

Get some cabin porn right to your browser -- check out my Substack on the lovely places I visited since July, all the way from New England to California and back to Virginia.
In the meantime, I won't leave you in suspense: the year of cabins was a true treat.
"And when I looked up,
the sky had also turned black,
and I had aged a
hundred more feet down the road."
- from "The Shortest Night" by Victoria Chang

What do cabin guest books offer us as a record? As a canvas? As a genre?
Find my thoughts -- along with some of my favorite pages encountered this year -- in today's Substack ❤
Had a magical writing workshop on the "Art of Tension" at the Poe Museum two weeks ago.
We went on a tour of the museum to learn about Poe's life, studied "The Tell-Tale Heart" for techniques, and -- just as it got dark outside -- wrote our own suspenseful stories.
Thank you to the Poe Museum for hosting, to all the talented and fun participants, and especially to @abmendeee for bringing the party

"November like a train wreck—
as if a locomotive made of cold
had hurtled out of Canada
and crashed into a million trees,
flaming the leaves, setting the woods on fire."
- from "Reasons to Survive November" by Tony Hoagland
For all of those who feel words are failing us right now, perhaps this is somewhere to start.

"Hey — come over here. Right next to me. Put in your earphones or lean in close. This morning I’m bringing you to my phone, next to my ear, into my messages..."
This week, a written dispatch full of audio dispatches.

One cool fall evening, a dozen strangers meet in a garden courtyard. Pens and notebooks in hand, they explore the grounds before settling at a long, candlelit table. A raven watches them from a nearby branch. Pluto the black cat listens from the shadow of a stone column, and Edgar Allan Poe joins them from his marble perch. Someone asks, what scares you most?
On Sunday, November 3, you can find out what happens next.

"In my next life let me be a tomato" - Natasha Rao
I had so much fun preparing and facilitating two tomato-themed workshops this summer. It was a leap of faith and I owe a big thanks to @pizzabonesrva , to all the trusting and extremely talented participants, and to all my sweet friends who supported this project from near and far, whether it be attending the sessions, sharing the info, or giving advice.
Click through for a glimpse at the workshops and a bonus behind-the-scenes peek at the poster printmaking process, thanks to Katharine and her risograph. Thank you too to Allie for capturing the workshop-in-action! 📸
