Carol Goodden holds the keys to the soon-to-be-named restaurant in SoHo. Gordon Matta-Clark pulls back the scissor gate, while Tina Girouard—one of several artist collaborators assisting with demolition—asks a question.
Tina’s husband, Dickie Landry, captured the now-iconic photo, which Gordon later inscribed with the word FOOD—a gesture that transformed the image into an artwork.
Days later, another photo documented the group dismantling the Comidas Criollas sign, the last remnant of the space’s previous tenant. By then, the name had been chosen: FOOD, suggested by Tina.
Built through the hands of many—artists, friends, volunteers, and paid workers—FOOD became more than a restaurant. These images offer a clearer picture of its origins, the people who shaped it, and the legacy it left behind.
Today’s cheese is Stonebeck Wensleydale from North Yorkshire, England.
This cheese truly reflects the biodiversity of its origins both in terms of the breed of cows and the pastures they graze. When young, the cheeses are fresh with a juicy complexity. As they mature, the flavours deepen and have a long and complex finish.
