I spent the last month and a half at the 7th season of Feytopia, a seasonal community in the French countryside, with a group of exceptional humans who made me feel hopeful about this polycrisis world we live in. After years of researching intentional communities, I came there with the same questions I always carry: how do we bring more of these places to life, what does good leadership actually look like, and what can we learn from the communities that work well. What I did not expect was to find myself answering the same questions I usually ask other people. Trying to make sense, from the inside, of this collective quest to belong somewhere. I did not go there looking for love, but I found it in so many ways that filled my heart. I felt the space asking me to give a version of myself untied to my skills or gifts, and in that, I got to rest my "performative self." I learned that leadership earned through showing up with dedication and love does not need to be questioned endlessly. And I am grateful to have felt there both "big" and full of wisdom, but also "small," resting my head and being supported. This is what I keep coming back to in the research: the communities that work seem to create the conditions for all of this. Not just belonging, but the permission to be more than one version of yourself. Thank you ❤️
