One day, in 2013, Skye Gyngell asked Jane Scotter, the founder of Fern Verrow, for coffee. She’d heard tell of her produce: blousy lettuces; pink, furled radicchios; myriad varieties of squash and aubergine that few believed could even take root in the UK, yet which Jane carefully grew in her organic system in Herefordshire. It was just what Gyngell wanted for her new restaurant, Spring. Read more at the link in bio. You are beloved Skye, thank you so much….So grateful for the love and vision she brought into many people’s lives. To be in her orbit was wondrous: generous with her time and passionate plotting; oh, and plating that was heavenly. She was such a support, a mellifluous speaker and advocate for the soil with Jane @fernverrow Such a joy to work with her. Whenever I checked in with my @heckfield_place team whether they needed me, she’d pipe up from her corner: “Always”… and @porteliotfestival thanks to the generosity of @cathystgermans and later through work for @made_thought thanks @fonemark . Put simply, her philosophy was always about doing the work… at 110 percent. Skye gave away her books (she knew journalists’ pay) and pushed for writers to be paid properly. I’m sharing the last time we chatted at her London home this spring for Monocle on the last post, trigger warning, and her thoughts about how crazy busy the cooking and growing life was… and about doing something good. What a legacy. God, I’ll miss her and glad she knew just how much she meant to us all. So wonderful today to be with @cathystgermans on the North Shore where we will honour her beautiful life. See you down the road, Skye 💚💚💚 —Prepping for stage —Always back to the room, she made it her rule never to sit down at events, always FHB (IYKYK) —Prepping @heckfieldhomefarm —Plating in the old greenhouse —Monocle outtake

For renowned biodynamic grower Jane Scotter, the connection between soil and table is a living relationship built on care, patience, and trust in the land. Through her work at Fern Verrow and Heckfield Home Farm, in partnership with Spring Restaurant, Jane brings biodynamic principles to life, revealing how the care we give to the soil shapes every flavor that reaches the plate. In the latest Save Soil News interview, Jane dives into her journey from London’s kitchens to the fields of Fern Verrow, and explores how diners, chefs, and farmers alike can restore balance to our food systems and play a part in rebuilding our connection to the earth.
