Incredible news - the stolen anvil has come back to the forge! Heartfelt and grateful thanks to everyone who shared the original post of the theft last week and also to the good people who returned the anvil. This really feels like a happy Canada Day today in our caring community.
This anvil was stolen from outside Fernie Forge late last week. Originally from Swindon Railway Works, it was sold by one of the last blacksmiths to work there. If you hear of anyone suddenly in possession of a large 400 to 500lb cast iron anvil or saw anything suspicious from the highway, please get in touch. The RCMP were notified immediately.
The end of an era. After three years of trying to relocate Fernie Forge into Fernie at the back of Eye Of The Needle and two planning applications refused, Sandra has decided to retire as a blacksmith and concentrate solely on her felting studio and gallery. The Highway signs came down this morning. Thank you to all customers, past and present.
There are plans to move Fernie Forge into Fernie. As part of this process, the acreage in Hosmer has just been listed for sale. Fernie Forge is not closing but hopefully relocating as a smaller working forge.
The chimney at Fernie Forge was swept today, ready for Sandra to light the hearth again when the weather gets cooler. Thank you Kootenay Masonry & Sweep for a job well done.
Sandra was honoured to received an unexpected visitor this afternoon at Fernie Forge. Bob Tunks is the current Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, an ancient guild in London, UK. Sandra was proud to show Bob and his wife Kerry certificates that David and Sandra were awarded when they lived in Britain 20 years ago.
Wow! Fernie Forge/Eye of the Needle has been nominated for three awards this year. Sandra now needs your help to explain why her business should be a finalist. The Google reviews are 7 years old. Can anyone write a new review, please? Preferably a good one! Either on Facebook or Google. Thank you.
Fernie Forge was pleased to donate 6 inch wide steel brackets to BC Province Heritage BC for the installation of informational sign boards at the former Hosmer Coal Mine, now recognized as a Provincial Heritage site.
Paul Bunyan’s body has gone to the USA to be restored and eventually displayed in the American Giants Museum. However, his head is not part of the original and has been donated to Fernie Museum. So the legend lives on in two locations. Fernie Forge is proud to have been part of Paul Bunyan’s ongoing story.
Sandra was privileged last night to be a special guest at the firefighter recognition dinner at Elko Community Hall, where she was honoured to accept David Barrett’s fire helmet. David was a member of the Hosmer Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years, until the day he died. Thank you to RDEK and Elk Valley South Country Fire and Rescue Services.
