Recent logo for a high school leadership council. The school’s mascot is a charger so the illustration focused on the horse and exploring different expressions and postures of confidence and leadership.

One of the challenges to this logo was achieving the alignments on the 2nd image. I wanted to build the wrench using some of the angles in the K, with a straight top of the wrench. It took some tweaking but I was happy to make it work.

Some sketches I made for a logo project I’m currently working on. These explore a few options for the horse’s posture and positioning. Which one do you think the client should choose?
Here’s some context on the project: This will be for a high school leadership foundation. The mascot of the school is a charger horse. The client would like the horse to express strength and confidence.
For now, these sketches are pretty rough. Once the client selects one of these I’ll create a much tighter sketch and work out all the line work and details before bringing it to computer. Plus I plan to give the horse some added muscle and power.
This is the first time I’ve created these types of sketches digitally with a Cintiq. I still prefer pencil and paper, but wanted to try a digital version of my process with this one.

A bunch of logos, icons & illustrations I created over the last few years. I find this to be a useful exercise to build these arrangements every once in a while. There’s something about trying to make everything fit together like a jigsaw puzzle that gets the layout side of my brain working.

Plus whenever I’m browsing design work and I come across logo & illustration patterns I’ll stop and pore over all the details. It always inspires me to create my own.

For years a good friend of mine and I would talk about how fun it’d be if we teamed up & designed cool stuff. Time would pass, we’d hang out & talk about it and then go back to our lives & full-time gigs. Late last year we started talking more seriously about it and we gave it a name: Forged by Fire, which to us just meant “united by our passion of design”.

So we started developing a logo for it. No rules, no parameters, just have some fun and create whatever we felt like. Here’s a look at what we’ve come up with so far. Over time the “by” in “Forged by Fire” became an “x”. Not only were we liking how it was looking visually, but the idea of multiplication was intriguing, including the way it was playing off the logo’s 2 hammers.

The more we’ve been sitting with the idea and the name, the more we’ve been exploring it’s meaning to us. If “fire” = “passion”, then that could apply to anything you’re passionate about. And from a much broader sense, part of life’s journey is finding that thing or things we’re passionate about, that fire in each of us, and staying true to it.

We don’t have a website or a product yet, but we’ll get there. For now we’re just having some fun building this creative outlet. Hope you like it so far!

After some obsessing & indecision I’m ready to finalize the color palette for this one. These were the last 4 options I was considering. I like them all but I’m really leaning towards option 1. The detail that’s nudging me there is the last slide where I’ve mocked up some social profile pics. I’m just really liking the energy & pop with the yellow.

You may notice option 3 is a bit different than the rest. This is where I was initially headed to final. But as much as I like the palette I just really wanted something with more life & excitement.
