Spotlight: Video Art Night in Dallas artist Fabian Guerrero & Christopher Sonny Martinez 📷 Fabián Guerrero is a queer, first-generation Mexican American born in Dallas. He works with film and photography to document and create images that reflect on pasts, presents, and possible futures of our generation, shedding light on his family’s history and the meanders of the brown and queer communities. Christopher Sonny Martinez is an artist, educator, and community organizer whose practice is rooted in the historical foundations of photography and film, using images to amplify marginalized voices and foster deep communal connections. His work centers on intimate portraits of my Mexican-American family, my chosen queer family, and historically underrepresented communities. Together at VAN Dallas, they present ‘Tierra Frontera,’ a video work serving as a visual manifesto for the Rio Grande Valley, reclaiming a region often eclipsed by the singular narrative of a “border town.” At its heart, the project centers the Mexican-American and Latino experience, celebrating a culture that thrives despite the heated political tensions and militarization that define the border today. That’s the final of our Video Art Night in Dallas spotlights! There’ll be more updates and sneak peaks right here ahead of the big event on April 17. Stay tuned! @fei_bian @sonnybunni • • • Video Art Night 2026 is an immersive, outdoor exhibition of video artworks presented in unexpected public spaces. Shantell D’Marco @shantell_dmarco Born in Havana Cuba 🇨🇺 migrated to the US with her father only at the age of 12 with her mother and rest of her family behind. They made it to Miami and settled on the West Side of the city, in her teenage years she spent a difficult time navigating a new life away from what she knew and starting a new one. In her later teenage years she knew that the arts/theater was something she dreamed of and aspired to be a part of and while she may not have had the chance or access to join a school of the arts her high school she was still able to join drama and have a gateway to express her talents. By the age of 16-17 wanting to escape and find a source of freedom her and her friend would sneak away at midnight and attend the old club waterfront in Miami - underage and sneaking into clubs to let it all out which also became a space where she saw her ever first drag/ trans women performers which captivated her to then later on taking the chance to join there newcomer talent show and winning by then she caught the attention of possible the club owners/ dealers of the club that saw her potential and quickly took her under their wing which by them they gave her the name of vivienne Shantell….after taking some time of taking on the journey and years later of taking the role of a performer now in Miami she was rising. But she always knew she wanted more and to evolve, Shantell later on moved with her boyfriend at the time to Tennessee which then found her full name, being a Selena fan at the time before her death Selena had starred in a movie (Don Juan Demarco) starring Johnny Depp which only had about 20 sec screen time which was her signing at a lounge in the background Shantell being upset but a fan of Selena and honoring her time in the movie she stuck with with and birthed her name Shantell D’Marco, the rest is history, Shantell found herself back in Florida making her appearance at the once Parliament House in Orlando and would often join icon Erica Andrew’s for weekly performances, Andrew’s wanted to make Shantell an Andrews but refused she said “ you built your legacy and I will build mine “ and needless to say to say she did!
