Botanica del Barrio and associated holistic artivist projects are currently at the Oakland Museum of California through January 2025. @oaklandmuseumca This weekend, creator, spiritual artivist, professor, performer and healing arts practitioner Felicia Montes @feevaone of Mujeres de Maíz @mujeresdemaiz will be at the museum Saturday 9/14 12pm in the gallery for a gallery talk. She will share more about the pieces in the installation with song, spoken word, and stories. On Sunday 9/15, 1pm at OMCA She shares a wellness workshop in the garden, focusing on herbs, and plant medicine along with ritual song by In Lak Ech @inlakechmdm . WEARING MY 🫀HEART ON MY SLEEVE today For My Sisters. May 5th to honor #MMIW - Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) National Day of Awareness. MMIW is a crisis and grassroots movement addressing the disproportionately high rates of violence, murder, and disappearance of Native American and Alaska Native women and girls. From early on I’ve always connected the femicide in Mexico and Guatemala to this issue and although different areas - much of the same. @mujeresdemaiz has always connected the issues & struggles of Indigenous women across politically imposed borders. Today I’m wearing all @balamscreationz who highlights this issue through her regalia and fashion, clothing, beaded jewelry and purses. I got most of the items at the Native Market put on by the Gabrieleno Tongva San Gabriel band of Mission Indians sgbmigt Support Native & Indigenous women and bring awareness to the issue anyway you can. They will do anything to take our joy. But we RESIST!! ✊🏽 — FACTS —- Indigenous Women (girls +) murdered 10x higher than all other ethnicities. Murder is the 3rd leading cause of death for Indigenous Women (Centers for Disease Control). More than 4 out of 5 Indigenous Women have experienced violence (84.3%) (National Institute of Justice Report). More than half Indigenous Women experience sexual violence (56.1%). More than half Indigenous Women have been physically abused by their intimate partners (55.5 percent). less than half of Indigenous Women have been stalked in their lifetime (48.8 percent). Indigenous Women are 1.7 times more likely than Anglo-American women to experience violence. Indigenous Women are 2xs more likely to be raped than Anglo-American white women. MAY DAY Boyle Heights. Yesterday at my work/campus I went to our faculty union’s May Day commemoration. A person came up to me and asked if it was my first time at this type of event. I mentioned that I have been going annually for the past 30+ years and thanked her for being there. She was surprised and also seemed happy to know that many are here for the long run. Today I met up with our UCLA interns who helped outreach for the upcoming Féria De Bienestar on 5/9. They were introduced to generations of movers and shakers from across Boyle Heights. It was a good day as a Mujer de Maiz. Thank you to all the organizations on the ground doing the good work an all those at actions across the city, country and word.
